A trial, notable for the application of “the unwritten law,” resulted in the acquittal at Wiltshire Assizes of John Price, charged with the murder of his -brother. Nathaniel, on .January 12. John admitted that he shot his brother three times. His defence was financial b.v public subscription. The defence stated that accused committed the crime not in the heat ot temper, but in an agony of <le-pair because his brother brutally ill-treated his parents and terrorised the family. Mr Justice Ridley, in summing up, said the circumstances were horrible. There was no question of self-defence. Nathaniel was shot like a rat. But he would he sorry to see a verdict ot murder returned. He suggested the accused should he either acquitted or found guilty merely of manslaughter.
