Auckland, Last Night. At about ll o’clock this evening a fire broke out in ona of the largest business blocks in the city, bounded by V ictoria, Queen, Elliott and Darbv streets.
The flames had a good hold when disco veered.
Apparently the outbreak started in -Ylackay, Logan and Caldwell s goods warehouse just below the Roval Hotel, which is in another block.

The firm was carrying the new season’s soft goods and the loss on the Pi-nnoh an !l,_ stock is estimated at £loo, o oo. The building and stock are n ell insured in various New Zealand offices.
The Brigade put up a great fight. in the block adjoining Alaekv Logans considerable damage was done by water and smoke to the premises occupied by Stone, bootmaker, Todd, tailor, Hill and Plummer, oil and oolourmen, and the London and Berlin Piano Company. Lesser damage was done to the mises of KinUear, dentist, and the •Singer Sewing Alachine Company M r •Stone carried a heavy stock of leather goods. His loss is heavy. Some ttmber on the roof of the A.ALP. building on the opposite side of Queen street caught fire, but it was promptly extinguished by the firemen. ft is understood various insurance companies hold risks of £65.060 on Alaeky Logan’s stock, and £13.000 o n the building. Hill and Plummer s jtQck was badly damaged bv water It was insured for 114,000. principally in the South British. The London and Berlin Piano Company’s stock was valued at £2OOO to £3OOO. and o / alr , y well covered by insurance. Schneidemen Brothers' stock was valued at about £BOOO. They had just moved in and were insured prior To removal, and instructions were posted at 10 o'clock last night to have the stock and buildings insured. A fireman named .Tack McArthur was severely injured by falling debris and was taken to the hospital. The building destroyed was one of the oldest of its kind in the central portion of the city. It was originally of two storeys and built 30 rears ago. The cause is a mystery.’ A constable who was on the beat stat s that in passing earlier in the evening he discovered the Elliott street door open, anil was inclined to believe someone had broken in.
Later. Investigation shows that the damage by fire extended considerably outside Alaeky. Logan's warehouse. The City Chambers, a big tour-storeyed block, caught lire on the top and' at least half-a-dozen occupants of offices and shops suffered very severely. Holdsworth owns the building, aiid although he is insured for £3200, loses heavily. Hill and Plummer estimate their loss over the insurance at from £IOOO to £ISOO, and .<lr Stone estimates tile damage i.v water at £2OOO.
