RETURN OF THE TERRA NOVA

The preparations for the departure of the Terra Nova for the Antarctic are being pushed on, and it is anticipated that everything will be in readiness for the departure of the vessel on December loth. The various stores and requisites asked for by Captain Scott are coming to hand, and they will shortly be stowed away in the vessel’s hold. It is common knowledge that the Terra Nova will take down seven Indian transport mules and fourteen sledge dogs. Air .T. .J. Kinsey, who has been acting for Captain Scott, state 1 that in the event of the expedition not reaching the Pole this season, the mules and dogs would he available as a reserve for an attempt next season. Even if the Pole were reached this season, a party would in all probability be left in the Antarctic to carry on important scientific work. The animals would he invaluable to the party for transport work. Air Kinsey is also sending down twelve sledges, which were asked for by the leader of the expedition. Six of these were presented by an Australian firm, and six were procured from- Norway. Snow shoes for the mules and ponie s are also being sc nt down. The mules and dogs non on Quail Island are doing splendidly, and it is expected that they will he in fine fettle for their work in the Antarctic.
