ELECTION CAMPAIGN.
THE MASTERTON SEAT. MR HERBERT’S MEETINGS. Air A. H. Herbert will not speak at Mangamaire to-night (Alonday) as previously advertised, but on 24th inst. Mr Herbert decided some time ago to postpone this meeting on account of Air Massey’s visit to Eketahnna, and notice was given in ,our columns at the time, but the old date was inadvertently left in the advertisement.
Mr Herbert addressed a meeting at Nireaha on Saturday evening. Several ladies were amongst those present. The candidate had a good reception and received a hearty vote of thanks. THE PR TCE OF BEER. Are you in favour of State-owned pubs and would you be in favour of reducing the price of a pint of beer to 3d ?” was asked Mr G Hunter at Da nnevirke. “No,” replied the candidate. “I am not in favour of State-owned pubs nor in favour of reducing the price of beer ” The facilities now for getting a glass of beer were quite sufficient, and he would not be in favour of a man getting two pints of beer for the same money as at present. SECRET OF PROSPERITY. Apropos of the credit claimed by the Government for the prosperity of the Dominion, Mr J. Bollard said at Avondale that the refrigerator and cream separator had done more for the Dominion than had any Government. An elector, sarcastically: “Did Ward invent them?” Another elector: “No, Alassey!” SIR J. FINDLAY’S RESIDENCE. The length of Sir John Findlay’s residence in Parnell will depend upon the result of the poll in December. The candidate told his lady auditors at Parnell that he hoped to be not only their representative, but their neighbour. Fie would continue te liyre in Parnell at any rate for the greater part of next month. “But,” lie added. “I frankly admit that if at the elections I am told I am not wanted here I shall not take up the roots of my home in AYellington.” A LIGHT-WEIGHT. Air Bedford, who is a candidate for Dunedin West, is a man of very diminutive stature and light weight. Speaking to the electors on Friday night he commented on the various members of the Alinistry. Dealing with Sir James Carroll he said the honourable gentleman once said to him: “Bedford, if you will ride my horse in tlie New Zealand Cup—(Laughter)—l am sure you will win. A'ou are ust the cut of a jockey, and you will make infinitely more money at that than in politics.” JOTTINGS. At l’apatawa on Saturday evening Air J. H. Escott addressed a very well-attended meeting, Air Revnell being in the chair. On the motion of Air Ebbetts. the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
Air Hawkins addressed a large meeting at Porangaliau on Saturday night. Air Frank White presided. The candidate received a hearty vote ot thanks.
Sir Joseph AYard has arranged to speak in Air Alasseys electorate on the 17th inst., the same date as Air Atasse.v is engaged to speak at AVinton.
