A file occurred in a hairdresser's shop, occupied by J. AlcLeruon, in the Library Buildings, owned by Air Bushuell. It was /extinguished before much damage was done. The insurances were £3OO on stock and £IOO on fittings, both in the Standard office. A young woman named Edith AlcLeod was admitted to the hospital this evening suffering from a bullet wound on the right breast, '■lie comes Irom tiie Alotu district, and admits having shot herself with a pea rifle. Jealousy is sard to have been the cause. Gisborne, Alay 1. John Wilson, arrested lor burglary at Kaiti, who pleaded guilty and was committed to Auckland for sentence, escaped tram the lock-up this morning. He has not yet been re-arrested. A man named John Wnum. committed yesterday to Auckland Alcntal Hospital on a charge of lunacy, jumped overboard from the tender luatea as the latter was proceeding to the steamer Victoria this morning. The constable in attendance grabbed him by the leg as he jumped over the rail, but was unable to hold him, and ho dropped into the water and was not seen again. Taihape. May 1. George Fannin, late duel clerk ia the Lauds Office at Invercargill, is dead. Deceased held the record of 32 years Government service. and only retired last Alarcli. He came here las; Saturday to settle with his second son, and was stricken with pneumonia yesterday. He was 6S years of age. Wellington. May 1. H. M. S Sydney to-day with two cases el scarlatina on board. The patients are bluejackets, and were removed to the hospital. lwo short sharp shocks ot earthquake were tolt here at 3.10 tins morning. The premonitory symptoms alarmed many persons.
