PONGAROA NOTES
VALEDICTORY. A very pleasant “send off’"’ was held in the Foresters' Hall on Monday, 22nd inst., in honour of Mr A. C. Tucker, solicitor here, who is leaving this district for Waipukurau to practise his profession. Mr James Carolan, J.P., presided, and after the usual loyal and patriotic toasts had been duly honoured, lie gave “The health and future prosperity of the guest of the evening, referring to his great popularity in the district, especially in the department of cricket, and indeed in every legitimate sport. A' captain of the local cricket club, his tine batting performances would be greatly missed, for he mi, ti.e top scorer of the newlyformed Cricket Association in the district. Ho wished him every success in his new sphere of work. Mr Tucker, in replying, said he greatly regretted leaving Rongaroa and the many genuine friends lie had made since his sojourn amongst them, yirl ho would have nothing but happy memories of Pongaroa to carry with him. Hi- heart was too full on this occasion, and, thanking them sincerely tor the kind wishes, lie begged to he excused from making a long speech. He announced his intention ot giving a trophy for the best hatting average next season. Mr Ligertwood proposed the, “Pongaroa Cricket Club,” coupled with the name of Mr Gould, who suitable
Mr Gould gave the toast of “VisitClubs,” responded to by Mr Buckett, who intimated that he would give a cricket ball for the best bowling average in the association next session. Mr P. Kent save “The Donors .o'f Trophies,” namely: Messrs F. Armstrong, C. C. Holmes, Mitchell and Griffith, Exley, Robinson and Coville. Mr Robinson responded in his usual happy style. Mr C. - Martin gave the toast of “Mr Percy Kent, their past Secretary,” who had the most to do in the formation of the cricket club and general sports in Pongaroa, very often at a loss to himself. Mr Kent, in reply, gave a humorous sketch of the first start at cricket here in the early days, playing with broom handles and potatoes, etc. The toast of the “Press,” proposed by Mr Tucker, was duly responded to by Mr Ligertwood, who then gave the health of the chairman, congratulating him on the honour lately conferred upon him. Mr Carolan, in reply, said he considered that the honour conferred on him reflected honour on the district which had supported him in the County Council, to which the people of the district bad elected him. He would do bis best in carrying out the duties appertaining to a Justice of the Peace. Songs and sentiments were given during the evening, the singing ot “Auld Lang Syne” bringing a very pleasant function to a close.
