GENERAL KUROPATKIN ASKS FOR REINFORCEAIENTS.

AIUNITIONS OF WAR AWAITING TRANSPORTATION.

Though General Knropatkin is demanding reinforcements of a quarter of a million men the Government has suspended moblisation in Poland and some other districts, fearing a general rising. One hundred and forty thousand cartloads of war stores are awaiting transport in Manchuria. The Japanese wounded during the campaign now total 140,000. The newspaper “ Rnsski Invalid ” estimated that Field-Marshal Oyama commands half a million men. Field-Alarslial Oyama reports that he buried 2000 Russians in the vicinity of Heikoutai. The third Baltic ileet are exercising preparatory to starting for the East.

THE LOSS OF THE SAUJEN

London, February 11

Commander Okuda, second in command of the cruiser Saujen, narrates that the vessel struck a mine in Louisa Bay on November 13 while co-operating with the army in its attack on Metre Hill. Eight men in the engine-room were killed, and as the ship was sinking Captain Togima, who was on the bridge, ordered the crew to save themselves. Lieutenant Xashitomi went to his cabin twice, rescuing portraits of the Alikado, the Empress and the Crown Prince. Engineer Tone similarly saved the signal book. Only two boats could be launched, as only two minutes elapsed between the explosion and the sinking of the vessel. The enemy from Laotishan poured a deadly fire upon the occupants of the boats, and those struggling in the water, and equally on the rescuers from comrade ships. Commander Okuda and Captain Togima sank together. Captain Togima and 30 men wore lost, and 19 officers and 140 men were rescued.’

The“ Daily Telegraph’s Tokio correspondent states thet Japan has purchased, through a United States firm, the Chilian battleship Captain Pratt, and lias ordered in England four battleships similar to the latest type of British vessels ; also half a million pounns worth of guns.
