COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET.
The return complimentary banquet tendered Mr Nirealia Tamaki, the well-known chief of Harnua, and other friends, by residents in and around Pahiatua, took place iu the Olympic Theatre last night. Some thirty natives chiefs, representing the East and West Coasts, Wairarapa, and the Auckland districts, were iu attendance, and the pakehas. including our leading town and country residents, numbered nearly one hundred. The whole affair was a brilliant success, and the management are to be congratulated on the fact that their efforts were greatly appreciated hv the visiting chiefs, several of whom mentioned that rahiatua was tho first town to extend to them an invitation to attend a function similar to that in which they were participating. Many excellent addresses were delivered, and we regret space does not permit us publishing them ; the speakers were : —Messrs J. D. Wilson (chairmani, Mahupuku, Hori te Huki, Karitiana, Harold Smith, R. Smith, \\ . Warren. Hanea Kanea Ropata, Paliura, H. Rodgers. Cook, Gault, Maeloskey, I'. Perrv, McKinnon. T. Brown, and others. Songs were given by Messrs Morris. McKinnon, Hawkins, and Munns. The Pahiatua Baud played several selections during the evening. Some of the old-time Maori songs given bv the natives present were much enjoyed. The catering was carried oat by Mr 1. Young in his best style, while the palms, etc., for decorating, were kindly lent by Mr T. Horton, of the Premier Nurseries.
