DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY

We have with regret to record the death of Mrs Margeret Martin, who may fairly be placed in the category of old identities. The old lady, who was 78 years of age at the time of her death, came to the colony in 1842 in the ship “ New Zealander,” landing at Nelson. Soon after she removed to Wellington, where she married James Martin, a shipwright of Kiawarawara. Her husband built a schooner and left Wellington in it for Taranaki on the Ist June, 1846, and since that date he nor the vessel nor any person on board have since been heard of. The deceased lady, with her two daughters, has resided in various parts of New Zealand since her husband was lost, and for the past 25 years has lived with either one or other of her daughters, Mrs A. W. Sedeole and Mrs W. W. McCardle, senior. During the fearful fires of January, 1898, Mrs Martin, who was then living at Mfingahao with Mrs McCardle, received a shock from which she has not been able to rally. She passed away on Monday evening last, and leaves two daughters and a large number of grand children to mourn their loss. The funeral is timed to leave Mr A. W. Sedcole’s residence for the cemetery at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow (Thursday).
