TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I have been absent from home for a few weeks and consequently missed seeing your late issues until my return a few days ago. I note that at a special meeting of the County Council a deputation waited on the Council re the damage done by the overtlow of the Mangaramarama stream. The deputation was quite right in its appeal, as it is (or ought to be i the duty of a local body to rectify and deal with such matters. Instead of doing so, I sec Cr Bolton attempted to cast a senseless sneer at the Government over the matter. I think, sir, it is a great pity 3uch silly and worse than silly remarks should be allowed to pass unchallenged at the Council table. It is all very well to say that no one pays any attention to what Cr Bolton says or does. Very likely not about hero, but such remarks travel and do harm, not to the Government, but unfortunately to this district as a whole. As a ratepayer who knows what he is writing about, I would draw the attention of all level headed men to the fact that were it not for the Government coming to the ratepayers' rescue and maintaining most of the county roads for years past, many of the people who are now prosperous, or nearly so, would now ic both homeless and landless. Did the National Ass Government <\>r do this? Not at all. While Ci Bolton puts himself forward as the critic for the Asses the Liberal party has nothing to fear.—l am, etc., A Ratepayer.
