A NEW INDUSTRY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln your article on the above subject the above statement appears : “ The price of fibre is at present £3O per ton. The average cost of production is about £1 per acre to produce 200 pounds of fibre.” At that rate the producer would only lose £ll Ids per acre on the land he cultivates with this valuable plant. I am, etc., Dunderhead. [“ Dunderhead’s ” calculation is right as far as the figures quoted are concerned. The extract reprinted by us in the article mentioned is not correct. The correct figures, taken from the Financial Statement, are : Price of fibre at present £3O per ton ; average cost of production, about £1 per acre to produce 23001bs fibre. Taking these figures “ Dunderhead ” will see that the industry would prove highly profitable. £3B 10s per acre profit is a profitable investment surely.—Ed. H.]
