Blair and Co., of Caledonian House, will have a startling replace advertisement in next issue. W e will not spoilt ui effect by hinting at its contents, but would advise one and all to watch for it.
The men at the new ballast pu at Ngawapurua struck work yesterday for an increased rate of pay. Mr Jack, of the local Public Works staff, was successful in obtaining men in Woodville to nil their places without any delay being occasioned.

Mr \Y. R. Hasciden. S.M., yesterday imposed the minimum hue of AM and costs upon a man who had been convicted of haviug supplied intoxicating liquor to a Maori woman. The charge was laid under the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act Amendment, The Magistrate spoke strongly on the necessity of enforcing the provisions of the amendment, and allowed U to be understood that but for the fact that this was the first case brought under the Act in this district and that n was possible the defendant was not aware of the proviMon. the fine would have Urn larger. It was, he said, imperative that the supplying of liquor to aboriginal w omen should be stopped. At the S.M. Court yesterday, before Mr W. R. Basel den, CM., a resideut of the district applied for the muc of a prohibition order against his wife, la reply to a question he admitted that he had afforded her opportunities of obtaiumg liquor and had kept it in the house. The Magistrate strongly adtised the
applicant to sign the pledge and keep temptation away from in* wife. It was his duty for his wile’s sake to become an abstainer and assist ner to follow a similar course. Mr llascideu said he wisiud it distinctly understood that lie would not allow these orders to be made a weapon with which one person could punish another. The application for a prohibition order was adjourned for one month.
