FATAL EXPLOSION.
One Girl Killed and Two Others Fatally Injured. jBT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.— COFYRKinj. fee feess association. Received G p.m. Melbourne. September 518. An explosion took place to-day in ihe Colonial Ammunition Company'a factory at Footscrty, Due girl was killed outright and two Olliers fatally ■uj ured. Later. Details ot the explosion at the ammunition factory show that three girls, Alice McLeod ‘aged 171, Elizabeth (17). Henrietta Fitzpatrick (17). were engaged finishing cartridges tilled with powder when suddenly an explosion occurred, blowing the roof of the building off. Miss McLeod was killed instantaneously. while her companion* were blown across the room. Miss Ureenhani expired a few hours later. Miss Fitzpatrick, who was also very seriously injured, seemed to realise that her case was hopeless and began to sing " Bock of Ages " as she was being removed from the building. It is supposed that a brass cap on the end of a cartridge was struok by machinery, thus causing tho spark which ignited the powder.
