A man named James Ridges, living at Mi Fields’ place at Waikanae, cut his throat with a razor at noon on Saturday and is dead. Previous to taking his own life, he attempted to cut the throat of a girl named Hannah White, an adopted child of Mr Field’s. She rushed away screaming, ami presently Ridges went into the kitchen with his throat cat and fell down, and got up and went to his room, where he wounded himself aguin and fell deud. The girl had a narrow escape, as the main artery was just missed. Ridges was of a uiorose character and particularly disagreeable at times, especially when under tho intluenee of liquor. Mils White is 15 or 111, and it is supposed the man was jealous uf her.
