QUEENSLANDERS IN LONDON
By Electric Telegraph—Copvright. I’er Tress Association. Los no*, June IN. The annual dinner of the Queenslanders in London was held to-day. Sir Henry Norman. ex-Governor. w as m the chair, and the guest* included Sir Hugh Nelson <Prtmien, Mr Byrne* • AttorneyGeneral'. Sir George Itowen. Admiral Bowden-Smith. and the Bishops of Brisbane. Rockhampton, and North j Queensland. The Chairman expressed the opinion ' that there was nowhere a greater feeling 1 of loyalty than existed in Queensland. He congratulated the colonists upon the success of the new loan. Sir Hugh Nelson said he was confident 'of the f jture of the colony. It only ! required population by a more desirable class of immigrants to assure a greater degree of prosperity. The Government was encouraging settlement, and hoped eventually to convert a large portion of sheep runs into prosperous centres. The last 10 or 12 years Wad presented troubles unequalled in the experience of Queensland. including, drought, floods, diseased stock, and the financial crisis. They were, however, undismayed, and the troubles had taught them lessons which will tend to make the position better in the future. He was gratified to find that ; Queensland retained the confidence of the British investor. It was impossible ' to develop the colony without borrow ing, I and there would be no difficulty in finding 1 sufficient money tc pay the interest on ! the loans. The doubts which had been I expressed as to the credit of the colony | were a deliberate insult. Excellent Governors had been the strongest link ' between the people of Queensland and | the Throne. Mr Byrnes said that though a small minority in Queensland might endeavour ' to stop immigration, it was the intention ! of the colonists to make Queensland a nation w ithout separation from England.
