Makuri.

Mr P. Scally, with eight teams of drays and horses, passed through a few days ago to commence his installing contract on the Upper Valley Road. With the present fine weather he should bo able to make good progress. Mr Hogg, M.H.R., was expected to visit Makuri on Friday last, and preparations were made to give him a suitable reception, but the disappointment peculiar to visitors announced for Makuri again ensued, and our estimable member was not in evidence. I hear the bad weather stopped him from starting.

Our worthy constable shows he is the j right man for the place by his shrewdness in making an arrest here recently. Mr N. Willoughy succeeded in landing | a fine trout the other evening from the I Makuri river just below the Hotel. The J fish, which was in the pink of condition, | is the first ono taken. It scaled 1 ilbs ! and was a very fine specimen, and turned out excellent eating at table. It was taken with a May fly. It is expected that the cricket match with Woodville will take place here on Saturday the Hth inst., and word is to be sent in definitely by the sth. There are no signs yet of the Govern- ' ment making a start with the many works ' requiring their attention, and for which ! money has been put on the estimates. It j is to be hoped the County chairman will ] pay Makuri a visit and look up the various matters requiring attention at the County ' Council’s hands. The Makuri-Woodville J road has several obstacles in the shape of fallen riiim and other trees on its formed road and if they stay there much longer will be in danger of sprouting. The language of the settlers near these obstacles is showing signs of deterioration, and naughty cuss words arc freely hurled at the authorities. Nuf «ed l
