Referring to Mr Henniker Heaton’s statement that the Postmaster-General has promised to convene a conference, Mr Cook denies the truth of it, and states what he said was that the other colonies would have to be consulted in the matter. As the proposal meant the expenditure of £5,000 por annum to New South Wales, he did not think that colony could afford it at the present time. The Redfern Railway Disaster. Sydney, November 1. Messrs Berry and McKenzie are the latest victims of the Redfern railway collision. This makes the number of the lives lost to 10. This Day. Gillies, another of those injured in the railway accident, is dead. The funerals of the victims takes place to-day. The inquest has opened. Welliams, driver of the Goulburn train swears positively that he challenged the signal which was immediately lowered. The signalman declares that he forgot all about the Goulburn train and did not set the road or lower the signal for it. Alleged Embezzlement. Sydney, November 1. Hannibal, clerk to Messrs Wright, Heaton and Co., has been arrested on a charge of embezzlement. It is alleged the defalcations amount to £5,000. The Ruahine. Hobart, November 1. Arrived—Ruahine from London. She sails at daylight to morrow for Wellington. She has 27 Australian passengers and 240 for New Zealand. This Day. Two of the firemen of th* Ruahine have been sentenced to twelve weeks’ imprisonment for broaching the vessel’s cargo. They rummaged the stewards’ stores with naked lights. The captain states that the fire which broke out on the vessel during the voyage was probably duo to some similar action. Mr Eddy’s Retirement. Sydney, This Day. Mr E. M. Eddy, Chief Commissioner of Railways, whose term of office expires in 12 mouths, has notified the Government that he will definitely retire from the position at the end of the term. Received 12.30 p.m. Payment of Members Bill. Sydney, This Day. The Payment of Members Bill passed tho Assembly by 31 votes to 28.
