(From our own Correspondents.) Makuri. 1 he eountry all around is beginning to show of spring grass now growing well. The excitement of l*nt week was “The babe* in the hush," two nice children aged 11 and 1 years respectively, of the name of Porteous'wheae father,* carpenter, resides at Woodville. They were first seen at the Ngaturi bridge by Mrs Myers, the wife of one of the eontraetors, who came epon them at dusk as they were about to • sap for the night under a log close by. Mrs Myers with womanly instinct took the children in ami gave them a bed fer the night They *aid they were off to Makuri to join their father, who was work,ng there. Mr Myers on the following morning saw them sent on to Makuri in Mr Tuekey’s brake. Arriving at Makuri aad their father not being there, they were kindly taken care of by mine boat of the Makuri Hotel, who gave them food and shelter, intending on the return of the mach next morning to send them home again. Morning came and the children mere got ready to start In a moment they reeurred again to their wandering instinct, and made ofT into the hush at the bask of the hotel. The alarm was given and a search psrty headed by Constable Murphy and several others went off in search of the youngsters. After an hour or two they discovered small footprints on a bush track, and were shortly afterwards rewarded bv the discovery of the lost ones. This time a sharp eve was kept on tthm ; in fact they remained under locked doors till the coach waa ready to start, and were then consigned to the charge of Mr Tucke.v. who safely landed them at Pabialua, on rout# for their home at Woodville. A public meeting is to be held on the |t;th insi. at the Makuri Hotel to discuss various nailers of interest Telephone, public hall, football, cricket, and lawn tennis is the bill of fare, and a large at ten lance ia expected.
