Melbourne, August 23. Matthew Larkin was sentenced to live years on a further charge of embezzlement from the South Melbourne Society, to run concurrently with the sentence he is now working out. Frozen Game. Melbourne, August 23. The Agricultural Department has shipped twenty tons of frozen hares and rabbits to London. A Terrible Tragedy. Melbourne, August 23. A mysterious tragedy is reported from Maryborough, 112 miles northwest from here. A widow named Vennells who kept a boardinghouse left her home to post a letter, and on her return found three of her children, aged seven, five, and three respectively with their heads battered in by a tomahawk. Two of the children are dead, and the third lies in a critical condition. There is no due to the perpetrator. The sum of five pounds and some jewellery are missing from Mrs Vennells’ house. The theory is that the robber was disturbed and in revenge murdered the children before decamping. Later. The first reports of the Maryborough tragedy were somewhat exaggerated, as none of the children are dead. One is iu a very critical condition, but there is some hope of the other two recovering.
