DISTRICT NEWS.

(From our own Correspondents.)

Ballance.

June 17th.

Things are verj' quiet here since the factory closed. Indeed there is very little doing of any kind.

Bushfelling has not commenced as yet, and road work is pretty well all finished.

Mr G. Shute, of Masterton, I think, is fettling on the road to Woodvill# Mangahao on Mr Crimp’s place, which he has taken with a view of becoming a supplier to the B&llance factory.

I hear of several cases of dog* worrying sheep. In one instance a settler succekled in shooting two dogs amongst his flock. The young grass is doing very well, owing to the mild weather we have had lately. Judging from preaent indications we will have a considerable area under crop—potrtces, etc.—next year. Two settlers to my knowledge are having ten acres s piece stumped, aud several others small patches. The school committee met on Wednesday. 13th inst. Present—Messrs Cooper, (chairman). Brown, Robinson, McDavut, Heard, and Tait. The minutes were read and confirmed. The master* report showed a Alight falling off, owing no doubt to the wet weather. It was agreed to make the school library a lending library, the subscriber to deposit a book and pav 4s per annum in advance quarterly. The Regulations under which attendance prizes were given were somewhat altered, making the percentage of attendance required greater than last year. The inspector's report wae reee.ved. and was very favorable. The meeting then terminated.

Too much praise cannot be given to Mr nnd Mr Robinson, who have done much to make B&llance pleasant for some of the young folk. They have established a singing class, and a practice is held every Thursday evening, the effects of which were apparent on the night of the concert.
