Mr Edgar Stead, who has been on a visit to England, has returned to Christchurch. Mr James G. Anderson lias been appointed principal of the South Otago District High School. Archbishop Redwood, who has been spending the winter months in Brisbane, returned to Wellington by the Makura. Mr Paul Edmonds, examiner in elocution for the Trinity College of Music, London, arrived in Dunedin from the north on Wednesday. Mr Isamu Kawase, a student of Kcio University, Tokio, arrived in Christchurch on Wednesday to begin a three years’ course at Lincoln College. Mr W. E. Leadley has been appointed employment and vocational officer for the Christchurch district under the Disabled Soldiers Civil Re-establishment Act. Mr Fred Morris, late of Clinton. Middlemarch, and Dunedin, has been appointed manager of the Cut Rate Providers’ Store at Eltham; Mr P. Kavanagh, barrister, of Auckland, has been appointed editor of the New Zealand Law Journal. He has been literary editor of the Month for the last two years. Dr Thora Marwick, who graduated at the Otago University, travelled by yesterday’s express from Dunedin to Christchurch. She intends to leave New Zealand on November 2 for England. Air G. F. C. Tanner, who has been transferred from the Commercial Bank, Hurstville. Sydney, to take over the management of the Dunedin branch, vice Mr SAngel, who will be manager at Hobart, arrived in Dunedin on Tuesday. Miss A. C. Tizard. ALA., senior mistress at the Hamilton High School, was on Tuesday appointed principal of the Wanganui Girls’ College by the board of governors. The appointment was made by a unanimous vote from a total of IS applicants. Air AV. J. Alarplcs, the noted English dog judge, was a passenger by the Alakura from Sydney to Wellington. He wil(_ act as judge at the forthcoming AVellington Dog Show, ami will then proceed to Perth (Western Australia). Rangoon, and Bombay to fulfil further engagements.

Air Gordon J. Williams, an associate of the Otago School of Alines, who is doing research work at the Royal School of Alines, South Kensington, returned to London early last month from the south of Spain, where he was engaged during the university vacation in geological work for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Min ing Company. Commander R. Ramsbotham, R.N.. who has been appointed to command 11.M.5. Laburnum in succession to Commander C. E. Hotham. D.S.C., whose two years have expired, is a passenger for New Zealand by'the Tainui. which left London on September 12. Until recently this officer was navigation assistant to the Director of Navigation. Hydrographic Department. Admiralty Chart Establish ment, Cricklewood. Commander Ramsbotham was among the first cadets to join Osborne College when it was opened in September, 1903. When war was declared he was a lieutenant in 11.A1.5. Queen, of Rear-admiral C. F. Thursbv. From November. 1914, he served as navigator of several light craft, including the destroyer Afentor, torpedo-gunboat Hazard. and flotilla leaders Kempenfelt. Shakespeare, Valkyrie, and Alontrosc After the war he was navigator of the Admiralty yacht Enchantress, the cruiser Diomede in China, and the aircraft carrier Eagle. Promotion to rank of commander- came in June, 1926. His last service afloat was as executive officer of Hermes, in China, 1927-29. Reference to the service rendered over a long period by the county clerk (Air J. J. Woods) was made at the meeting of the Tuapeka County Council on Friday, and the chairman (Cr Alurney) moved the following resolution:— ‘ That this council places on record its sincere appreciation of the unique ser- " vices in_ length and efficiency of Air J. J. Woods as clerk, treasurer, rate collector and returning officer to the council. He has occupied the position since the formation of the countv in

1576, and during that time has gained for himself a sincerely earned reputation for efficiency, integrity and devotion to duty which could not be surpassed, thereby raising the prestige of the Tuapeka County Council to an enviable position among local bodies to-day. In retiring, he carries with him £he gratitude and good wishes of the ratepayers of the county as well as the council, all the members of which wish him every- happiness in his retirement.” The motion was seconded by Cr Bennetts, and carried. It was decided to appoint Air AVooda honorary- confidential adviser to the council, in order that his valuable experience and advice should not be lost.
