Burnside, October 7. Fat Cattle. —There was a large yarding, numbering 273 head, consisting of medium to prime ox, with a fair proportion of light and medium cows and heifers. The sale opened with a good demand for prime heavy bullocks, but eased for the follow ing two races, showing a recovery over a remainder of the yarding. Values showed a marked depreciation in particular towards the close for handy weights. Heavy bullocks could be quoted as being firm, while other descriptions, including cows and heifers, improved to the extent of 10s to 15s on the average, compared with last w.eek's rates. GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Messrs Donald Reid and Co., Ltd., report as under: —

Wheat.—Samples are still arriving, and, as millers are not operating, these can only be submitted to the fowl wheat merchants. The value of good whole quality to-day is 4s 7d per bushel, ex truck, Dunedin, with the market inclined to ease. Shrivelled wheat and lines out of condition are hard to sell. Oats.—The bulk of last season’s threshing has now been offered. Grade oats are not in plentiful supply, but a large quantity of No. 1 feed and undergrade still remains unsold. A grade oats are nominally worth 2s 2d, B grade Is lid, sacks extra, on truck, country stations. Chaff.—Ample chaff is arriving for all inquiries. Though there is not much prime quality held in gtore, there is little inquiry from feeders. Medium and inferior is greatly in over supply, and sales are hard to effect. Prime is worth £4, sacks extra, ex truck, Dunedin; other grades from £3 to £4, ex store. Potatoes.—Very few potatoes are arriving on the market. Farmers state that present prices would mean a loeg to them after paying picking expenses, bars, railage, and handling charges. There are, however, samples held in the stores. The bulk of these are sprouted, and are realising only 30s per ton. Freshlygraded lines are worth from £2 to £2 10s, ex store. LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE INVERCARGILL, October 6. The week!j’ stock sale held at Lorneville to-day attracted smaller yardingg than was the case last week, with the exception of the fat cattle section. The fat sheep market opened below last week’s quotations, but it firmed towards the finish, when prices were on a par with recent rates. The fat cattle market opened on a par with last week’s rates, but the operations of a few outside buyers brightened competition considerably, and prices advanced by fully 20s compared with those ruling at the last sale. Fat Sheep.—Extra heavy wethers sold up to 235; heavy butchers’ wethers, 203 to 22s 3d; medium weights, 17s to 19s Gd; and light and unfinished, 12s to las. There were several pens of good quality ewes forward, and a pen of extra good ones realised 17s 6d. Good butchers’ ewes sold at from 14s to 16s. Fat Cattle. —Prime good quality bullocks realised from £lO to £l2; good handy-weight, from £8 to £9; prime heavy cows, up to £8 10s; good medium quality, £6 to £7; inferior quality, down to £4; prime quality heifers, up to £8 ss. THE POTATO MARKET CHRISTCHURCH. October 6. A movement occurred in the potato market this evening. Advices from Auckland were that sales had taken place there at £4 and sellers were asking £4 10s. Whites were gold to-day at 40s to 42s 6d, f.0.b., and sales were reported at higher rates than this. Farmers were paid £1 a ton to-day on trucks. WAIAREKA SALE There was a small yarding in all classes of stock at the Waiareka sale yards oh Tuesday. * Fat Cattle. —One fat heifer and one fat steer were both passed at auction. Fat Sheep.—One fat ewe realised 12s 6d and, three pens of light weights 15s Gd to 17s 6d. Store Sheep.—One pen of a"ed ewes and lambs, all counted, brought Gs, a pen of halfbred ewes 8s 6d, and a pen of good Romney cross hoggets 16s. Store Cattle.—One pen of yearling steers brought £1 10s; store cows £1 17s 6d; one very forward conditioned store cow £4 2s 6d; 18 months’ old Shorthorn heifer, £1 17s 6d; two-year-old steer, £2 6s; and mixed-sex yearlings, poor eoi> ditioned, 14s. LONDON WHEAT MARKET LONDON, October 5. Wheat cargoes are steady at late Parcels are firmer. Futures: LondonDecember, 20s 2d; February, 21s 2d, Liverpool—October, 4s 3d; December, 4s 5Jd; March, 4s 84d; May, 4e 10jd. THE WOOL MARKET LONDON, October 5. At the wool sales 8365 bales were offered, including 1945 from New Zealand, of which approximately 3925 were sold. There was active competition, with a good clearance, but there were frequent withdrawals of merinos, owing to the high limits. New Zealand: Greasy crossbred, “ Arakihi,” 9d and Sd; slipe, “ Pareora,” lOd and Bradford is quieter. Prices are firm. SYDNEY WOOL SALES SYDNEY, October 6.

At the wool sales 10,855 bales were offered, and 9852 were sold, in addition to 982 which were disposed of privately. Best spinners’ wools did not meet with the same competition as last week, but other grades remained firm. Greasy merino made 14id. The average price of wool last week waa £ll 5s per bale, or 8.4 d per- lb.

ADDINGTON MARKET CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. To-day’s weekly market at Addington Was one of the firmest there has been for a very long period, the principal features being a further sharp advance in fat sheep values, an advance in store sheep values, and a slight firming in eattle values. Store Sheep.—A limited yarding ot ftiixed quality and a fairly free auction. Prices were up to Is a head better than at last market. Values were: Sound f.m. ewes, with lambs, 7s 2d to 8s 8d; medium three-quarterbred ewe . hoggets, to 13s; good halfbred wether hoggets, to 12s lOd; ordinary wether hoggets, to lie. Spring Lambs.—An entry of 247, the largest for the season. The quality was medium, and the sale steady. Prices were lower by 9d a pound, the average top price being 27s Id. Fat Sheep.—An entry of 3000 head, eonstituting a short supply. There was a sharp increase in values. Heavy sheep advanced up to 4s a head, with an average advance of 3s a head over the whole sale. Fat Cattle.—An entry of 339 head, ineluding heavy consignments from Otago and the West Coast. The quality was the best for a long period. A very firm sale resulted, with a slight advance for steer beef. Prices per 1001 b were: Choice medium-weight beef, to 355; good prime medium-weight beef, 30s to 335; primest heifer, 29s to 325; ordinary steer, 26s to 28s 6d; heavy-weight, 27s to 30s; cow, 24s to 275; ordinary cow, to 245; rough, down to 18e. Values were: —Extra prime heavy steers, to £l7 7s 6d; prime heavy, £l2 10s to £l5; prime mediumweight, £lO 5s to £l2; ordinary quality, £8 to £10; light steers. £6 to £7 10s; extra prime heifers, to £l3 2s Cd; prime, £lO to £ll 15s; medium, £7 to £9 15s; light, £5 to £6 15s; extra prime cows, to £l3 7s 6d; prime, £9 5s to £ll ss; medium, £7 to £9; light, £5 to £6 10s. Fat Pigs.—A smaller yarding,- which met with a better demand at improved prices. Values were: Choppers, £3 to £4 Ils Cd; baconers, 50s to 56s 6d; heavy baconers, £3 to £3 5s 6d; extra heavy baconers, to £3 14s 6d. - The average price per lb was 5Jd to 6d. Porkers made 38s to 43s 6d; heavy porkers, 44s 6d to 48s 6d. The average price per lb was 6ijd to 71d. OAMARU MARKETS OAAIARU. October 9. An excellent week has been experienced ill North Otago so far as weather conditions are concerned, and a splendid growth has taken place in pastures and crops. The grain and produce market has been quiet, no business being transacted in wheat or oats, but there has been a. good demand from merchants for ryegrass, clovers, rape, mangold, and turnip seeds for spring sowing. The stock market has also been quiet, the only private sales recorded being as follow.—Aged gelding. £2O; failingmouthed ewes and lambs (all counted), 6s 3d, 10s; three and a-half-year-old steers, £4 12s 6d; fat cows, £6 10s to £8 2s 6d; light fat steers, £7 10s.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, October 10. STOCK REPORT. There is little or no change to report in the stock market, the demand, as previously reported, being quiet. Eat cattle are still coming forward freely and values remain firm Fat sheep are still coming to hand in fairly large numbers, and, as also in tile fat cattie section, here too values remain firm. The store sheep market is quiet, yardings being small and prices do not .show much, if any, of an increase. Fat Cattle. —Prime heavy bullocks, £lO to £11; medium-weight ditto, £8 to £9; prime heavy heifers. £7 to £8; medium ditto. £4 10s to £5 10s; vealers, to 30s; runners, to £3.
