REVOLT IN LISBON
CONFINED TO THE CAPITAL LISBON, August 27. The revolt is confined entirely to the capital. Revolutionary airmen played an inglorious part, in which one of the machines indiscriminately bombed Almada, killing four citizens and wounding four. The plane then fled to Spain. LONDON, August 28. The Lisbon correspondent of The Times reports that 50 people were killed and 250 wounded during the suppression of the rebellion. Heavy fighting continued throughout the day in the city streets, in which shattered windows, bullet marked buildings, and the remains of trenches and gun emplacements mark the scene of the struggle. There was great damage in the neighbourhood of the fortress 'of St. George, ■which the rebels bombarded, and also in the vicinity of the presidential palace and the barracks of the loyal troops, over which rebel planes flew and dropped bombs. After the bombardment loyalists drove the rebelr. into Edward the Seventh Park, where taey entrenched, but they were dislodged bj a mass attack of tanks, two infantry anil two cavalry regiments, and aeroplanes. Remnants' of the rebels established positions in the zoo, necessitating further vigorous measures. A rebel plane bombed a village, killing two children and wounding several civilians, after which the pilot, like those who bombed the palace and the barracks, flew to Spain. There have been 500 arrests. LONDON, August 29. lhe Times Madrid correspondent states that a bomb was thrown through an open window of the writing room of the Portuguese Embassy, in which the Ambassador, Senhor Bareto and his wife were sitting. Senhor Bareto bent down to pick up the missile, but his wife hurried him from the room. A second later the bomb exploded, wrecking the furniture. There is no clue to the identity of the throwers, but it is believed that Portuguese exiles are attempting vengeance for the failure of Wednesday’s rising.
