BOLT FROM PRISON CAMP.
EXTRA 12 MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. WELLINGTON, August 5. Scorringe, who escaped from the Waikane prison camp and travelled to Wellington in the dog box of a railway van on June 17, was dealt with to-day. It appears that he was employed in a position of trust at Waikune, working about the motor cars and machinery, and was allowed more liberty than the other prisoners. Counsel pleaded that Scorringe’s sole idea was to come to Wellington to see his sick mother, give himself up. Scorringe’s father appealed to the court to deal with his son as leniently as possible. Mr E. Page, S.M., however, said he was not able to look leniently upon the offence. Scorringe had a substantial list of previous convictions, some for serious offences. He sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, to be served at the expiration of the existing term.
