TAHUNA PARK PROPOSAL.
BODIES CONCERNED CONFER. A conference of representatives of the Otago A. and P. Society and the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association was held in the society’s board room on Monday afternoon of last week, and was attended by Messrs James Begg (in the chair), W. O. M’Kellar, E. C. Hazlett, George Black, and H. Turner, representing the Otago A. and P. Society, and Messrs J. Sutherland Ross, W. G. Kindley, T. Somerville, Alexander Burt, J. Y. Love, and George Reid, for the Manufacturers’ Association.
The chairman said that the meeting was called for the purpose of considering what steps should be taken to secure adequate accommodation to meet the requirements of both the society and the manufacturers to hold an annual show and exhibition. The chairman explained that the society’s General Committee was unanimous in the opinion that the time was not opportune to spend a large sum of money in procuring accommodation at Tahuna Park, and the special committee appointed to deal with the matter had been instructed to co-operate with the manufacturers in any sound proposal which would meet the situation.
Mr J. Sutherland Ross stated that the members of the Manufacturers’ Association were of opinion that Tahuna Park was the most suitable site for show purposes, and the manufacturers were prepared to accept their full' share of the responsibility in carrying out the proposal that had already been submitted. If the society was convinced that the Tahuna Park scheme was not feasible, the manufacturers felt that they would have to look round for some alternative scheme. They were determined to proceed as early as possible with something in the way of an exhibition. After several speakers had voiced their opinions on the proposal, it was decided that it would be in the best interests of all concerned to work together, with the sole object of holding a combined show. The question of financing the scheme was discussed, and was held over in the meantime until a report could be obtained from the committee appointed by the manufacturers.
The chairman said it was very satisfactory to see the great interest that was taken in this matter, and also the good feeling that existed, and he felt sure that all present had only one object in view, and that was to obtain suitable premises.
It was decided that the special committee appointed by the Manufacturers’ Association should make full inquiries in regard to obtaining a suitable position, and report to a further meeting.
