RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

OAMARU J.C. MEETING. Saturday, July 5.

The Oamaru Jockey Club’s.meeting was held on Saturday in fine weather, and the attendance proved to be larger than was generally anticipated. The installation of a broadcast of the England v. New Zealand football match was probably responsible for a noticeable increase in the attendance during the latter part of the afternoon. The track provided sound going and although the scratching pen was freely used, those horses remaining on the card provided some interesting racing. Barrington proved too good for Red Heather and Hard Prince in' the Hack and Hunters’ Steeples. He was kept in behind them until nearing the last jump, when he took charge and won comfortably in the run home. Those holding the outside places made a poor showing. Red Royal, who has grown into an attractive-looking horse, proved too good for the opposition in the Novice Stakes. He is Rosenor’s first representative on the turf, and should win again as he looks sure to improve. Stella Bingen and Author Franz fought out a good finish in the Oamaru Trot, and there was very little between them at the finish. Starshooter, Haze, Alembo, and Royal Mint were taken out of the President’s Handicap, for which Glenrowan was made a strong fancy. The favourite and Evening were fighting it out at the distance, when First Raid came through on the rails and won comfortably, whilst Glenrowan had a narrow margin

over Evening for 4;.second place. . The scratching pen was again freely used in the High Weight Handicap, which re-' solved itself in to a duel between Jock o’ Hazeldean and Rascal. The latter stayed on best under the big scale of weights. Great Abdallah was elected a strong fav ourite for the Waikatira Trot, but he broke up and failed to get near the money. Author. Franz fan past Alinont Cling at the borne turn, and won well at the finish: Snowie Huon, Aviatrix, and Guy Bingen were racing in line behind- the winner ■when 50 yards from home, and they finished in close order. The scratching pen reduced the Farewell Handicap to five runners, and Dumblane, who recently joined S. G. Ware’s stable, wag backed down to a short price. The favourite had to be vigorously handled to beat West Dome, who had iriade all the running. The other ifiade a poor showing. The card was got off under efficient supervision and the result was. much better than anticipated. During the day £6846 went through the totalisator, and it is understood that a small profit was made over the meeting. An interesting feature of the meeting was the success of A. S. Ellis, A. E. Ellis, and L. J. Ellis, who won -all the galloping laces on the card. HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLE- 1 CHASE, Of 120sovs. Two miles. 2 —Mr H.
