AUCKLAND TOPICS.

The rising there-year-olds Great Emblem and Puriri Park are being hacked about preparatory to being put into work again by F. Gilchrist. Puriri Park has been gelded since he was spelled, and both hors'es have done well during their respite. Tetrachate met with injuries through getting in the wire some time ago. He was then given a good spell, and has come in again looking big and fresh as a result. Owing to the telegram bearing Luminary’s acceptance for the Trentham and Winter Hurdles being delayed, that horse has only one engagement at Wellington. He has been sent down to content the Highweight Handicap on Thursday, and taking a line from his showing in the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu, he will be very hard to beat. The yearlings by Brazen—Torfreda and Musketoon —Picture have had the respective names Bronze Eagle and Speedfast claimed for them. The former is growing into a handsome young horse who looks like making good. Speedfast is also a neat colt, but he is inclined to lack size.

J. Williamson expects to leave for Sydney on Friday with a team whose composition has already been mentioned. Odin, who is at present at Trentham. is to remain in J. Lowe’s care until after the Grand National meeting. H. Goldfinch was not long in riding a winner after his return to the saddle. The Aucklander is a top-class rider wh.i was unlucky to lose the season’s premiership, for which he seemed a certainty when he met with a serious accident at Te Arolia

Among a mixed lot of riders at Te Awamutu, A. Tinker and 11. Emery were responsible for outstanding efforts on Couachan and Te Hora. If Tinker’s movements were not restricted by the training of a big team of horses he would be much higher on the winning jockeys’ list.

The display of Lucess at Te Awamutu attracted the attention of the stipendiarj’ steward, but the explanation tendered by his rider .and trainer was accepted. It is reported that Lucess over-reached in the Hunters’ Steeplechase and so could not be taken to Trentham. He looks the part of a really good steeplechaser, and if specially prepared for the Grand National will take no end of beating.
