ORKNEY AND SHETLAND SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Orkney and Shetland Society was held on Wednesday evening. The president (Air J. B. Stout) presided over a fair attendance of members.
A letter was received from the British Immigrants’ Club asking for the cooperation of the Orkney and Shetland Association in organising a meeting of representatives of all societies which aimed at keeping in touch with British immigrants in order to lay before them the position with regard to old age and widows’ pensions. The Immigrants’ Club was endeavouring to have the time of residence in New Zealand at present necessary to qualify for the right to draw such pensions reduced, and the help of the association was sought in the matter. —Received.
After a prolonged discussion, which was taken in committee, it was decided that the Orkney and Shetland Association be declared defunct, and that a new body, to be known as the Orkney and Shetland Society, be formed. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—
