DEFRAUDING SOLICITORS.
OFFENDER SENT TO PRISON.
AUCKLAND, March 7. Rooert Vernon, aged 31, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment fo r obtaining from Mr Hall-Skelton, a solicitor, £5 by falsely representing that he was a land agent, and had sold a farm for £4750. Ihe chief detective stated that Vernon made a habit of taking down solicitors by telling similar tales. Counsel said the -accused had no money, end the temptation was too great for him. “The times are very hard.” he added.
The magistrate (Mr F. H. Levien): Who for? The solicitors?—(Laughter.) ■ “For everybody,” replied counsel. “ Solicitors don’t fall as easily for £5,” interjected Mr Allan Moody, who was in court. “ Some might, but not all.”
