SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The third Otago and Southland secondary- schools’ championship athletic meeting was held on the Caledonian Ground on Saturday under ideal conditions. The weather was mild, there was very little wind, and the track was in excellent order, with the result that times generally, especially in tlie senior events, were good. Splendid entries camt forward from the eight schools competing, no fewer than three teams coining from Southland. The following schools were represented at the meeting;—Otago Boys' High School (0.8.H.5.). Southland Boys’ High School (5.8.H.5.), Southland Technical College (S.T.C.). King Edward I’echnical College (K.E.T.C.). Riverton District High School (R.D.H.S.), Mosgiel District High School (M.D.H.S). M'Glashan College (M‘G.C.), Christian Brothers’ Schoo] (C. 8.5. The meeting wag under the control of the Otago Centre officials, and by their efforts the lengthy programme was run off in good time, and without any undue delay between the various events. Additional interest was lent to the meeting by a number of handicap running, field, a id cycling events being included in the nrogramme.

Competition in the championship events was pa.’+icularly keen, and during the afternoon three records went by the board. M. Hamilton, a Southland High School boy. gave a faultless display in the junior high jump, and cleared the bar at 4ft 104 in. breaking the record established by J Gilchrist in 19’27 by 24 inches. J. H Ramsay, of the Otago Boys’ High School, who scored second nlace in this event, a’so broke the record by 1} inches. Another record went to Southland through tlie agency of J. Gardiner, also of the High School, who won the 440 Yards Senior Championship in two seconds under th • existing chamnionship ime (58sec). The third record was by the South!ai. High School relay team, which, besides retain’ng the championship it won last year, cut out the mile relay in 4min Bsec — three .seconds under the previous best The Macassey Shield for the school <ainng the highest aggregate points in the senior section went to Southland High School with 2C points. Otago Boy s’ High being runners-un with 23 points. Southland thus disnossessed Otago of the trophy which it had held ever since the inception of the seconuarv schools’ meeting. The junior trophy (the Arthur Barnett Shield) was won by Otago with 19 noints. Smithland High being next with 10 noints. and Southland Technical College -■■xt with one point. J. Gardiner, the Southland boy. who ran brilliantly throughout the day. won the go d medal for the competitor gaining the highest nggrerrafp points in the senior events, and M. RECORD JAVELIN THROW.

SPEEDY GIRL SPRINTER. PALMERSTON N., March 2. tlie Manawatu Amateur Athletic Club s meeting this afternoon, S. Lay. of Hawera, threw the javelin 216 ft 54in. which is 10ft 6in longer than the Australian and New Zealand record. The wind, which had been blowing gustily across the line of flight, ceased while Lay was throwing, so the effort can be regarded as having been accomplished ia the calm. The race between Miss Norma Wilson (Gisborne) and Miss Phyllis Stewart (Wairoa) did not eventuate owing to the former being ill. Her place was taken by Miss Barron (Foxton), who beat the Wairoa runner over 100 yards by jseven yards, the time being 11 4-ssec. Running subsequently in another 100 yards, off scratch. Miss Barron did the distance in 11 2-ssec, which is equal to the New Zealand record. NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS. SYDNEY, March 2. At the State Athletic Championships, in the 220 yards event, Carlton retained the title, beating Hunt and O’Loughlia. Time. 22 l-ssec.
