ORIGINAL OF “BUBBLES.”

AUCKLAND, February 26.

An Australian business man, Mr E. H. Maas, who arrived by the Maunganui, is the original of the world-known painting, “ Bubbles,” by Sir John Millais. “ I was four or five years old at the time, and lived in London,” said Mr Maas. “ I was acting as page at a wedding when Sir John caught sight of me and wished to paint me. It so happened that the sittings were perforce put off for a month because I ate far too much at the breakfast and became ill, but in due course the painting was completed.” Mr Maas is quite ready to admit that few would now recognise him from his frequently reproduced likeness.
