The Council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association decided to-night that the New Zealand championship tournament should be held on a date not earlier than mid-January in each year on dates to be fixed by the Management Com- — mittee.

OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND.

INVERCARGILL, March 3. The annual interprovincial lawn tennis match, Otago v. Southland, was played on Saturday in glorious sunshine. Thecontest was a close and exciting one, but Otago succeeded in carrying off the honours. When play concluded in the morning Southland had a lead of five matches to three, but in the afternoon Otago wiped off the deficit and gradually forged ahead to win by 14 matches to 10. The visitors thoroughly deserved their victory. Their ability to press home advantages and their refusal to regard a match as lost, no matter how far they were behind, being largely responsible for their success.
