Weather permitting, he will make his official attempt on the record on March 6. RIFLE SHOOTING. THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM. MELBOURNE, February 25. Lieutenant Marshall, the commander of the New Zealand rifle team, reports that all the men are fit and well after the journey. The team are now billeted at Williamstown, near the range, and have settled down to steady practice, which thus far has been entirely, satisfactory. Marshall says that there will be no excuse if the team is beaten. The men greatly appreciate the ssistance and kindness of the Victoriar Mr Manson, the New Zealand Government agent, has been helpful to the team. March 2.

The New Zealand riflemen completed a satisfactory week’s practice ■ in ideal weather conditions. The meeting opens on Monday with the Argus and Australasian aggregate over 300, 500, and 600 yards. The team on Friday was the guests o£ the Melbourne Cricket Club at

the England-Victoria cricket match, and of the V.R.C. on Saturday at the races.

ROWING. OTAGO EIGHT-OAR CREW. The following have been selected to represent Otago in the Interprovincial Eight-oar Championship, to be rowed at Lyttelton on March 16,: —Brugh (stroke), Solomon (7), Clark (6), M'Ara (5), Cramond (4), Mitchell (3), Eggers (2), Pritchard (bow). This crew is subject to alteration at the discretion of the Selection Committee or coach. SPEED BOAT RACING. RUGBY, February 27. Major Segrave’s racing boat Miss England, in which an attempt will be made to beat the speed record on water underwent a second test on Halifax River to-day, and it is estimated to have developed a speed of 70 miles an hour. SWIMMING. NEW SOUTH WALES LADIES. SYDNEY, March 2. In the State Women’s Swimming Championship, 220 yards, Jean Cocks defeated the title holder, Edna Davey, by seven yards in 2min 41 4-ssec, reducing her own Australian record by 5 3-ssec. Miss Davey’s time was 2min 47 2-ssec. Dulcie Raine was third in 2min 50 2-ssec.
