FLAT RATE FREIGHTS.
PROPOSED ABOLITION.
SMALL HARBOUR BOARDS CONCERNED.
TIMARU, February 22. At a special conference, called by the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, to-day, at which representatives of all boroughs, county councils, and public bodies throughout the district were present, the question of tne abolition of the flat rate system of freight on exports overseas was fully considered and the following resolution was carried unanimously:— “ That this meeting representative of the district of South Canterbury emphatically protests against the proposed abolition of the system of a flat rate of freight on-exports from all ports of the Dominion; that copies of the report of the meeting and of this resolution be sent to the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, the Overseas Ship Owners’ Committee, and the harbour boards and chambers of commerce at Invercargill, Oamaru, Greymouth, Nelson, Napier, Wanganui, and New Plymouth; and that, if the necessity arises later, these bodies be urged to co-operate with the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Timaru Harbour Board in a united effort to have the existing system retained.”
