At the St. Clair golf links on Tuesday afternoon Mrs Gilbert (captain) and Mrs Breeze (deputy captain) gave tea and piesented trophies, Mrs C. Wight (senior) and Mrs Allan Young (junior) being the winners.
Mrs Bulte, who has been travelling overseas, will leave London on the Oronsay on the 27th of this month, and, by arriving in Sydney on December 5. hopes to be back in Dunedin in time for Christmas.

Miss Lois White leaves England by the Ruapehu in November for New Zealand. Professor and Mrs Park have left England to return to New Zealand via South where they intend spending a few weeks. It is always pleasant to hear of people returning.
Much disappointment was felt here at the inability of Capt. Kingsford Smith and party to visit our southern city. Certainly the climatic conditions were most unfavourable, making it only too evident that they could not come. Now a good flight and safe arrival in Australia is the wish of all New Zealanders.
On Saturday evening Miss Dorothy Roberts gave a cabaret party at the Tudor Hall for Miss Marie Stead, Hawke’s —Bay. As usual, the hall looked beautiful f with coloured lights and glorious flowers 'Present were Misses Batchelor, Fenwick (2), Al. Hartmann, and G. Finch; Messrs P. Bridgeman, R. Blunt, G. Wilson. Reeves (2), and Chettle.
After a cold spell of tempestuous weather the sudden change on Saturday to warmth and glorious sunshine was a treat and ideal for all out-door sports. (The basket ball teams, ten in number, competing for the two Te Taumata shields were indeed fortunate in having such a day. The Oval was a fine sight of life and activity.
A very successful evening was given by the music circle at the Otago Women’s .Club on Friday’ for Miss Vera Moore, the brilliant pianist. The evening being an open one was largely attended, and all enjoyed the opportunity of meeting Miss Moore. She spoke of her recent visit- to Nelson, and the enthusiastic reception of the audience when she gave her piano recital.
On Wednesday Miss Phyllis Cheeseman have an afternoon tea for Miss Joan Hartmann, who wore a navy blue gown, with hat of navy and fawn. The hostess wore a becoming frock of beige georgette, her mother, Mrs G. R. Cheeseman, assisting her daughter in entertaining the guests. Present were Mesdames. A. A. Finch, W. O. Al'Kellar,' and, Terence Bridgeman; Misses N. Hartmann, B. P.eeves, D. Ramsay, and R. Oram.
The Dunedin Hospital Guil V held the last meeting for the season on \mrsday. Mrs Glendinning, president, was in the
chair, and about 40 members were present. The attendance throughout the year had been excellent, about 550 garments having been made. The guild had sustained a great loss in one of its valuable members in the death of Miss Hutchison, who was one of the original members, and had acted as treasurer for 21 years. All stood in silence as a mark of respect and regret.
Mrs H. J. Duncan gave an afternoon tea at the Tudor Hall on Friday for the members of the executive before giving up the presidency of the Ladies’ Bowling Association. The tables were arranged in tones of purple (the association colours). The Ladies’ Bowling Association held a most successful birthday party at the Pioneers’ Hall on Wednesday. The cake was a wonderful work of art, representing a bowling green, woods, and kitties. The hall was beautifully decorated, and an enjoyable evening passed all too quickly.
The Plunket Society is holding its annual street sale on October 5, and is much disappointed at not having the large supply of narcissi coming from Messrs _ Simpson and Hart, which has been given them for the last 16 years. But this year the Weatherstone blooms are to go in another direction. Fortunately for the Plunket Society, a large contribution is to go to it after the Horticultural Society’s show from a northern grower. These flowers will be of a very high quality, and should make a good profit for the society.
Miss Joan Hartmann, whose wedding is drawing very near, has been the honoured guest at many little social functions throughout the week. Miss Greta Finch gave a morning tea at her parents’ residence, Royal terrace, on Tuesday. Among those present were Mesdames Finch. Leslie Mills, W. O. The results from the sale in the streets of art union tickets for the “ Southern Cross ” flags appears to have been very satisfactory, and will help to swell the hospital funds. A, very interesting evening was spent on Tuesday at the meeting of the Literary Circle of the Otago Women’s Club. Mrs Eastgate was in the chair, choosing the book “ Precious Bane ” as her subject for a talk which was very charming. The speaker _ had an intimate knowledge of Shropshire life and the quaint customs of the people, the plot of the book being laid in a wild Shropshire district. Mrs Nimmo spoke of the flowers mentioned, of which the authoress shows a great love and an intimate knowledge of Nature. Mrs Ewing gave a short history of the talented authoress. Others who contributed to the discussion were Mesdames Brickell, Rodgerson, Cowie, and Hervey.
A very interested audience listened to Dr North on'Thursday afternoon when he addressed the League of Mothers Union at the Y.M.C.A. lecture hall. Mrs W. Ross, president, was in the chair. The subject chosen by Dr North was “ Ideal Motherhood.” He pointed out the importance of home training in making the ideal mother, and that a girl’s training is incomplete it she leaves home without having learnt the dignity and high worth of motherhood. New Zealand’s leading position as regards infant welfare is very gratifying. After pointing out other important facts, the lecture was brought to a close. A very enjoyable musical programme was carried out by Mrs H. C. Campbell, Miss R. Burn, Miss Williamson, and Mrs Johnson. Tea was served at the conclusion of the afternoon.
On Saturday afternoon the most perfect weather and brilliant sunshine favoured the opening of the Otago tennis courts for this season. Everyone enjoyed the summer-like air once again, and the courts were kept full with energetic players all the afternoon. Others found their pleasure in watching the games and chatting to friends. Delicious tea, with all sorts of dainty cakes, was provided, and proved very too, on such a warm day. The guests were the Guide Committee, the parents of the Guides, and No. 1 Company. The badges won during the-year were presented, and after items and games a dainty supper was served. The official closing of the Ladies’ and Mens Golf Chibs was held on Thursday last. Mixed foursomes were played over nine holes, Airs N. CHRISTCHURCH,-September 28. Airs Peter Wood was hostess at a charming “at home ” at her residence, Papanui ro-ad, on Saturday afternoon given in honour of Aliss Vera Aloore, the Dunedin girl who has won her way to the forefront in musical circles in London, where she is recognised as a solo pianist of rare gifts and attainments. Airs Wood received her guests wearing a graceful frock of plain and patterned georgette in tones of brown and beige, Miss Moore’s attractively simple frock being of honeycoloured satin with flared skirt and dainty collar of self-coloured georgette. The drawing room was gay with beautiful daffodils and bowls of forsytiifo. After
a delicious tea which was served in the dining room, which was also gay with spring flowers, Miss Moore, with great generosity, played a delightful programme, which was much enjoyed by those present. BLENHEIM. September 2&. The Marlborough Horticultural Society opened its spring show at the Masonic Hall on Monday when there was a most attractive exhibition of spring flowers. As far as entries and quality were concerned it was something like a record for the society. There was a large attendance during the afternoon and evening, and some of those noticed there were Dr and Mrs Redman. Mr and the Misses Redwood Goulter. Mr and Mrs Stocker, Mrs G. Rudd, Mrs J. Corry, Mrs B. Clouston, Mrs C. Mills, Mrs D. Lester, Mr and Mrs G. Bacon, Mr and Mrs P. Monro, Mrs V. Dodson, Mrs F. Bull, Mrs S. Richmond, the Misses Murphy- (2), etc. Mrs J. Young gave a most enjoyable bridge party at her residence at Springlands on Tuesday evening. Mrs Mogridge and Mrs A. Duncan carried off the prizes. Large bowls of anemones and freesias decorated the drawing room, where a dainty supper was dispensed. The hostess wore a frock of blue lace.

Miss Amuri Neville has returned from a week-end spent in Wellington. Mrs F. Reid has returned from visiting her brother at Ferniehurst Station, Canterbury'. Miss A. Redward, of Wellington, is the guest of Air CL H. Mills, in Leitrim street. Great excitement is created here over the projected departure from Blenheim of the Southern Cross, which is to arrive here on Friday, and, weather permitting, to hop off for Australia at an early hour Sunday’ morning. Captain Kingsford Smith and party arrive here on Friday to make preparations and be in readiness for the flight, and whilst here will be guests at the Criterion Hotel. It has been arranged that an excursion boat will come across from Wellington to Picton to convey intending visitors to Blenheim, -and as a number of cars are also expected from Nelson there will doubtless be a large crowd present to witness the departure. WELLINGTON, September 28. Beautiful weather favoured Government House on Tuesday night, when an “ end of the season ” dance was given, and thoroughly enjoyed by a large assemblage of guests. The beautiful flowers everywhere were much admired, and were a pleasure. The ballroom was arranged with handsome groups of bamboo, palms, and ferns, and there were also the most beautiful pots of giant schizanthus in soft shades of cream, primrose, pink, and mauve, all grouped together, with charming effect. The cyclamen stands were also very fine, these shading from palest pink to wine colour. In the drawing rooms were handsome bulb flowers, early irises, and large freesias, while the refreshment room was adorned,, with silver and ebony bowls of jonquils and daffodils. The supper room was most artistically treated, there being fewer flowers, but on the tables were large golden epergnes and candelabra, with real candles, shaded with rose and gold, the effect being very charming. The conservatory and wide entrance veranda were arranged with comfortable chairs and sofas with coloured electric lamps -and again more flowers. Their Excellencies arrived m the ballroom punctually at half-past 8, Lady Alice wearing a handsome gown of shot rose and gold brocade, a tulle scarf to match, and diamond and pearl ornaments. Mr and Mrs J. F. Studholme, of Christchurch, accompanied them, the latter wearing a black gown embroidered heavily in silver and jet. Very interesting guests present were Sir John Salmon, Chief of the British Air Service; Squadron-commander Drummond and Flight-lieutenant Ledger, who are accompanying him on his tour. The debutantes -at the dance -were Miss Bennett, who wore emboesed velvet and georgette of palest pink, and carried a posy’ to tone; Miss M'lntyre (daughter of the Hon. W. H. and Mrs MTntyre), in white tulle and silk; Miss Rona Raw, in frilled white tulle with a large bow of taffetas at one side; Miss Constance Young, in shell pink beaded georgette; and Miss Catherine Young (daughter of Dr and Mrs W. Young), in cream georgette with touches of mauve. Each debutante carried dainty posies to match her gown. Others present included Mrs J. G. Coates. Captain and Mrs Reyne, Colonel and Miss Powles, Colonel and Mrs Symon. Colonel, Mrs. and Miss Hughes, Colonel and Mrs Falla. Major and Mrs Weir, Mr and Mrs A. P. Bennett. Dr and Mrs Palmer. A dance in which much interest was taken was the first one held by the Wellington division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, which took place- at their divisional headquarters at Thorndon quay. There was a very large attendance of members and friends, and the visitors were much interested at being received on a simulated e ‘ quarter-deck ” of one of his Majesty’s ships. There was everything complete, and the addition of port and starboard lights, as well as a chain of coloured lights added much to the brightness. There were many blue and gold streamers (colours of the division) and flags, which added to the good effect. The music w-as excellent and the supper of the best, so the guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the somewhat unusual surroundings. They were received by 'ommander W. Olphert, D. 5.0., D. RD., R.N.V.R., and Mrs Olphert, and among those present were Captain Reyne. A.D.C.. R.N., and Mrs Reyne; Paymaster-commander Fletcher, Can’tain and Mrs Middleton, Commander and Miss Lang. Sir Alexander and Lady Roberts and Mr Darroch (of the Wellington Navy League). Lieutenant Naylor, Lieutenant Bothamley and Mrs BothamTey, and many others. An interesting interlude during the evening was a very’ realistic display of a naval gun in action by a gun’s crewunder Chief Petty-officer Cox. A successful cabaret evening in aid of the Wellington free ambulance funds was held recently’ at the Adelphi, when there was a record attendance, the place being crowded in every part. The two dancing floors were fully occupied, and the .Orange Room -and the lounge were filled with card players, both bridge and 500 being played. Supper was an acceptable item, and afterwards there were several speeches, Mr T. Hislop (city councillor) thanking all for- their attendance, and those who had aranged such an excellent evening’s amusement Those mainly responsible were Mesdames Carter. Aston, W. Duncan. Mr and Mrs E. P. Norman, and Mr and. Mrs D. J. M f Gowan. Some graceful exhibition dances were given by Miss Phyllis Bates and Mr Ivor Critchlev. Miss Valma Spiller and partner, and

Cheers were given at the end of the evening for all who had made the evening such a success, including the management of the Adelphi, Mr Rodney Pankhurst returning thanks for both management and staff.
A delightful little evening was given Jiy Lady Hunter at the Adelphi Cabaret for the Misses Rackley, of Dunedin. The dancing to excellent music was much enjoyed by the guests, and the time passed most pleasantly for all. Lady Hunter was- in lilac mariette with touches of gold; Miss Dora Rackley, pink brocaded satin; Miss Aroha Rackley, cream taffeta and lace: Mrs P. A. Young, rose georgette heavily beaded to tone; Miss R. Ellison, cyclamen georgette; Miss Poutawera. flame georgette and lace; and Miss M. Ellison, -green georgette and silver lace. Messrs P. A. Young. A handkerchief ” evening was given recently for Miss Marjorie Silsby, who is shortly to be married, by Mrs Terries, of Dorincourt,” Upland crescent, when many friends -attended to offer good -wishes and dainty gifts. Several novel and amusing competitions helped to pass the time very happily, and at supper time the presentations were made. Among these was a silver basket filled with roses made of folded handkerchiefs, which was greatly appreciated by the recipient. Some enjoyable songs were contributed by Miss Ngaire Coster and Miss Terriss. Miss Silsby is leaving shortly for Dunedin, where she will make her future home. Lady Hosking has left for a visit to the south.

The spacious glassed-in veranda was utilised as a ballroom, and Chinese lanterns and coloured streamers backed by greenery afforded a picturesque setting for the dancers. A number of players was present from Cambridge and Te Awamutu, and a very enjoyable time was spent. The large room was used for bridge, and was nicely arranged. A gay little bridge party was given by Aliss Erma Ward on Thursday in honour of her guest, Miss Betty Alason, of Feilding. Aliss Ward was wearing a lace frock, and Aliss B. Alason blue panne velvet. Alatron Keddie and the nursing staff of the Waikato Hospital gave a most enjoyable dance in the Nurses’ Home on Thursday. The rooms looked very attractive with shaded lights and beautiful spring flowers. Aliss Keddie received her guests in a smart briar rose georgette frock. Others present were: Alesdames Af. Af. AUCKLAND, September 27. The New Zealand ladies’ golf championship commences to-day on the Auckland golf links at Afiddlemore. and will continue for about a week. The entries for the championship of New Zealand total 49, and among other well-known players who will compete are: Miss Oliver Kay, Afiss Af. Payton, Afiss D. Chrystall, Afiss R. Gambrill, Airs Dufaur, Airs Guy Williams, Miss G. Upham, and Afiss E. Culling. . It is to be regretted that the present champion, Airs H. Collinson, of Palmerston North, is unable through illness to defend her title. The links at Afiddlemore are in very good order, notwithstanding the heavy and continuous rains which we have experienced during the past winter.
The Victoria League rooms were bright with flowers on Wednesday afternoon, when a party was held to welcome Lady Afyers back to Auckland. There was a large attendance of members, and the President, in a brief speech, said how very pleased they all were to have Lady Myers amongst them all again, and how it was hoped the visit would be a happy remembrance. Songs were sung by Airs Corbin and Miss Faire, Miss M'Culloch recited, and Miss Anderson played a pianoforte solo.. The hostesses of the afternoon were, in addition to Miss Mowbray (president), Lady Sinclair-Lock-hart, Lady Nolan, Airs Devore, Mrs J. B. Afacfarlane, Mrs Rickerby, Miss Murray, Miss Gerard, Miss Chapman, and Miss Slator.
Airs A. A. Afartin, of Remuera, was the hostess at a large bridge and tennis afternoon on Thursday of last week, which was given as a farewell to Airs G. D. Af'lntosh, who has since left for England. Airs Afartin wore a frock of bois de rose crepe de chine, and Afiss Sybil Martin was in midnight-blue crepe de chine, and hat in a darker shade of the_same colour. Airs Af'lntosh wore a jumper suit in beige and green silk, and hat to tone. Tea was served in the dining room, masses of spring flowers, chiefly primroses, being used to decorate the table.
Alembers of the Pakuranga Hunt and their friends -were the guests of Air and Airs Wills Al'Laughlin at their home, Pohonui, Papatoetoe, on Tuesday afternoon of last week, after the last meet of the season. Among those who were riding were. Lady Jean Af'lntosh, Afiss Ethne Lloyd. Airs P. H. Smith. Aliss Hammond, Afiss C. Afartin, Afiss Broadstreet, Afiss E. Afartin, Afiss King, Afiss P. Weston, Afiss D; Weston, Afiss Af. Upton. Afiss Betty Crowther (Cambridge), and Afiss Eileen Afyers (a visitor from London). There were also present a large number of friends from all over Auckland, who had followed the hunt as far as possible, in their motor cars. Spring flowers in a colour scheme of primrose and various shades of blue were plentifully used to decorate the reception rooms and the tea table in the dining room.
The Junior Club gave an “at home” last Wednesday afternoon to a large number of guests. The president (Afr Afervyn R. Reed) and Afrs Reed received at the entrance to the club, the latter wearing a pretty frock of black crepe de chine with pale coral pink pipings, and caught with an ornament to one side; a small black hat was also worn, and white fox fur. •«-
