Average shade temperature at 9 a.m 38.6dcg; highest (30th: , 55.8 deg; West (Ist), 25.9 deg (average for July 341 deg; for August, 1927, 35.7dcg). below-, 32.0 deg on four mornings. Dry-bulb shade temperature -Average maximum, 52.5 deg (July, 46.0degf; average minimum, 30.3 deg (July, 27.7 deg) ; approximate mean, 41.4 deg (July, SG.Sdeg). The extreme maximum was 59.8 deg on 29th; the extreme m. 21.1dcg on Ist. For August, 1927, the average maximum was 47.9dcg, and the average minimum 28.1 deg. Average dry-bulb and wet-bulb, 9 a.m dry, 38.6 deg; wet, 36.6dcg; 3 p.m., dry, 51.1dcg, wet 44.7 deg. Mean relative humidity: 9 a.m., 81.3 per cent.; 3 p.m.. 56.5 per cent, of saturation.
Minimum grass temperature: Average, 23.6 deg (July, 22.9 deg; June, 23.4 deg). Highest, 39.0dcg on 23rd; lowest, 15.5dcg on Ist. The temperature fell to 32.0 deg and lower on all mornings, except 13th and 23rd (July 31 mornings, June 29 mornings).
Maximum solar radiation: Average, 72.3 deg (July, 68.1 deg) ; highest, 88.4dcg on 29th; low-est, 53.5 deg on 23rd. Average clearness of sky: 7 a.m., 65 per cent.; 9 a.m., 58 per cent.; 7 p.m., 54 per cent.; 10 p.m., 57 per cent. Wind, recorded at 9 a.m.: Calm, 22 days; N., one day; N.E., two days; S.E., one day; S.W., half-day; W., one and a-half days; N.W., three days. The force on these occasions —as from 1 to 16 miles per hour. Rainfall: 2nd, 2 points; 4th, 3 points ; 13th, 11 points; 20th, 23 points; 22nd, 1 point; 30th, 45 points; total, 85 points on six days. Average in August for four preceding years, 93 points on seven days. Rainfall from January 1 to August 31, 9.86 in on 57 days. Hoar frost occurred on eight mornings. There were no fogs nor mist. Smokehaze (owing to tussock-burning, prevailed from 25th to 30th. A faint aurora was observed on the 29th. General remarks: Barometer very unsteady. A number of warm days occurred, but the growth of vegetation induced by these was largely checked by the low night temperature, the average gross minim am being inly .7deg higher than for July, though the average day temperature was 61deg higher than for July.
