One extraordinary feature of the escapades of the Borstal inmate Maxfield during his bid for libertj’ was disclosed at the Invercargill Police Court’s proceedings (reports the Southland Times). He had never previously driven a motor car, yet on the night of his escape he took several cars out of garages and succeeded in getting nearly all to start and manipulated the gears without trouble. His experience with the first car he took out proved sufficient to enable him to take the Dodge as far as Balclutha. Few would have learnt so quickly. It is possible that there will be an increase in the price of oatmeal before long (states the Lyttelton Times). There has been a rise in the price of oats, and by wholesale merchants it is anticipated that this will be reflected in the price of oatmeal and other breakfast foods made from oats.
