During the week values of oats to northern merchants have again distinctly firmed, but as the London market has not responded to any extent, this increase in rates locally can be termed none other than artificial and due to the necessity of forward sellers covering their commitments. Notwithstanding, buyers are operating more freely at the increased rates, and a fair number of sales has been made during the last few days of A Grade Gartons at 4s 3d, f.0.b.. s.i. B’s, on the other hand, not being wanted for the export trade, have not increased in value to any appreciable extent, shipping values being round abcut 3s BJd, in fact’ it is rather difficult to make sales at this price. Duns also are somewhat neglected, the only real demand apparently being to cover sales made in the early part of the year. . For the local trade chaff is offering in rather more than sufficient quantities, and the price to growers on trucks, their siding, prime quality depending somewhat on the distance from the centre is about £4 per ton, sacks extra.. Thia figure being in excess of northern values, shipping is quite impossible. Though little business is passing in ryegrass the market remains fairly "firm at recent rates and from 4s lOd to 5s 3d per bushel is being offered for machinedressed seed varying in weight from 271 b to 301 b. Chewings Fescue and Crested Dogstail markets ar e much in the same condition. Prices have firmed during the last fortnight, values of both being about 8d per lb, f.0.b., with slightly' better price for extra quality lines. The stock market continues firm in prices, with a falling off in yardings. Fat cattle are offering fairly freely, and prices are inclined to harden. Fat sheep are making good money, a.nd the market looks as if this particular section would be right for some time to come. Store sheep are selling well, and prices are good, young ewes and ewe lambs are keenly competed for. Store cattle continue to sell well, and any offered in the yards make values at late quotations. Fat Cattle.—Extra heavy prime bullocks, £l6 10s to £l9; prime heavy bullocks. £l4 to £l5 10s: medium bullocks, £lO 10s to £l2; prime heavy heifers, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; medium heifers, £7 10s to £9; heavy prime cows, £9 10s to £l2;

(From Our Own Correspondent.) _ r OAMARU, May 11. the fine weather experienced during the past week has infused new life into the local markets, and there has been greater activity than for some time past in both cereals and stock. Wheat has been coming in freely to the mills, and the transactions have been on a fairly large scale. Hunters have sold at from 6s to 6s Id per bushel net on trucks, solid straw Tuscan at 5s Bd. Sensation at 5s Bd, and Dreadnought at from 5s 6d to 5s 7d. The animation that has existed in the oat market during the last few weeks has been maintained, and many sales have been made at prices highly satisfactory to the growers. A grade Gartons have changed hands at 3s 6d per bushel net on trucks, while B grade have realised from 3s Id to 3s 2d. A good many growers are holding in expectation of prices becoming still firmer. Oaten sheaf chaff is not in great demand, but sales have been made at £4 per ton on trucks. Fowl wheat has not been under offer in anything but limited quantities. The nominal price is about 6s per bushel. A few sales of barley are reported. Cape barley has been marketed at 3s net on trucks, and free Chevalier at 3s 3d. Partridge peas have sold at 5s 8d per bushel on trucks. The transactions in potatoes and grass seeds have been scarcely worth recording. The stock market has been fairly animated, and quite a number of private sales has been. effected. Fat ewes sold at 21s 6d to 225, fat lambs 34s to 34s 3d, fat wethers, light 325, forward store wethers 26s to 295, sound-mouth ewes 30s, ewe lambs 275, and full and failing-mouth ewes 14s. The chief sales of store cattle were made at the Duntroon sale, and the prices have already been recorded. Fat cattle have sold at values on a par with Burnside.
