OTAGO CHESS CLUB.

The first meeting of the committee of the Otago Chess Club was held last week, and was attended by Mr L. D. Grigg (president), Drs Merrington and Barnett, Messrs L. Cohen, S. S. Myers, R. M'Dennid, S. M. Gillie, O. Balk, and D. Harris Hastings. Messrs- S. S. Myers, L. Cohen, and R. M’Dermid were elected as the 'Match Committee for the ensuing season. It was decided to hold the usual three competitions—viz., senior and junior championships and handicap tournament, entries to close on May 12. On the motion of Mr Myers it was resolved: That the question of drawing up rules for the various competitions be referred to the Match Committee to report to the next committee meeting. Dr Barnett moved that post cards should be sent to all members of the club notifying them of the various competitions, date of entry, etc.—Carried Mr Cohen offered the use of his show room for the opening ceremony, at which the Mayor (Mr Taverner) had promised to officiate. His offer was accepted with thanks, and Mr R. M'Dermid undertook to form a working bee in connection with the function. Another member of the medical profession was elected a member.
