ROXBURGH. April 7.—We have had ah existing week with the Roxburgh jubilee school celebration, which occupied most of the. 4th and sth Inst., including the evenings.- To go into detail with regard to the function would take up too much space. It is sufficient to say that it was a great gathering. Old acquaintances of 60 years ago met and spent two days, never to be forgotten by old and young. The programme, which was arranged by Mr J. H; Walgth, secretary of the School Committee, was in every way Satisfactory. The free-and-easy concert for all scholars was a great success, also the second night’s programme of a fancy dress ball. The procession to the sports ground Pti Thursday was very picturesque, both children and adults looking well. The Roxburgh Silver Band gave of their best. One special feature of the gathering was the attendance of Mr Orr, of Dunedin, a retired teacher now in his eighty-seventh year. He took part in the procession of the first day, and called the roll—a lengthy matter. Mr Orr was schoolmaster at Roxburgh School in 1871, and was highly appreciated, being a real old friend of the girls and boys of his period. Mr Horn gave a lengthy speech concerning school board matters. Mr Smith, of the Otago Education Board, spoke briefiy.’ Roxburgh, he said was a satisfied class of people who seldom put forward a claim for anything. But now that they required a new High School building their wants would have the best attention. Mr J. H. Waigth and Mr A. H. Tamblyn also made brief speeches. Weather.—The weather has been beautiful for the past few months. The only regret is that no more rain has fallen. Everything is very dry, and grass is becoming scarce. LAKE COUNTY. April s.—With the exception of a heavy shower of rain on Tuesday evening, fine weather has been experienced during the week. Present indications are that it will be fine over the Easter holidays. Cricket.—A team from the Arrow Club journeyed to Pembroke on Saturday last and played Wanaka for the Burnett Shield. An interesting game resulted in a win for Wanaka by 17 runs in a one-innings' match. Scores: Wanaka, 100 (T. Willetts, 22 ; C. Collings, 16 ; J. Brooks, 12 ; F. Collings, 12 not out) ; Arrow, 83 (T. Johnstone, 16 not out; D. Thompson, 11 ; R. L. Fletcher, 11). J. Brooks and. C. Ironside were the best bowlers for the winners, and L. R. Smith and R. L. Fletcher were the most successful for Arrow.—Queenstown and Arrowtown schoolboys met at Arrowtown on Saturday, Queenstown winning by two wickets and 23 runs. Scores: Queenstown, 40 and 76 for eight wickets; Arrowtown. 40 and 53. Golf.—The annual meeting of the Wakatipu Golf Club was held at Queenstown on the 27th ult., Dr Anderson (president) presiding over a large attendance. The balance sheet showed a credit of £27 18s. Dr Anderson was re-elected president, and Mr W. Harper re-elected secretary and treasurer. The following were elected a committee Messrs Gilkison. A. H. Cooke, J. P. M'Bride, J. J. M'Neill, and L. J. Lynch. The opening day was fixed for Saturday, April I’4. Southland League.—The quarterly meeting of the Southland League was held in Queenstown on Saturday last. The president (Mr C. Y. Brodrick) occupied the chair, and those present included 10 members of the executive committee, Mr William Reid (chairman of the Lake County Council), Mr W. H. Overton (Mayor of Queenstown),' and representatives of local bodies. Local matters discussed included the Kawarau Falls-Kingston road, railway day excursions to Queenstown, the kea pest, and a proposal for a daily mail service between Dunedin and Queenstown during the winter months. On Sunday afternoon the visiting members of the league were the guests of the Lake County Council and the Queenstown Borough Council on a motor trip to Crown Terrace, via Frankton, returning via Arthur’s Point. During their stay in Arrowtown the members of the party, which numbered 28, were the guests of the Queenstown Progressive League at afternoon tea in the Haeremai Tsa Rooms. Personal.—Mr and Mrs Thomas Ure, who have been residents of Arrowtown for the past six years, have left for Oamaru, Prior to her departure, Mrs Ure was entertained at afternoon tea, and presented with a purse by the lady members of St. Paul's Anglican Church. The presentation was made by the Rev. W. W. Powell, who referred to the assistance that had been rendered in church matters by Mrs Ure. WAIKAIA. April 4.—The Waikaia dog trials—the fifteenth annual fixture—was held on the Commonage on March 29 and 30. As there were so many entries they had to be finished on Saturday morning. Heavy rain interfered with Friday’s events, but taken altogether the meeting was a great success. The usual dance in connection with the trials was held in the Masonic Hall on Thursday. March 29, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large gathering present. Pictures. —Kinema lovers are pleased to have pictures here again, as it is some time since Waikaia has had any such visitation ; but It must not be inferred that there Is any lack of amusements here. What with concerts, dances, etc., we are well catered for.
