SOLDIER SETTLEMENT.
PROBLEM NEARLY CLEARED UP. STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF • LANDS. CHRISTCHURCH. March 13. * I want to say on behalf of the Government that the problem of soldier settlement is nearly cleared up,” said Mr A. D. M‘Leod (Minister of Lands), speaking at the opening of a bridge in the settlement in Ashley Valley. “ I feel that any problem in soldiers’ settlement, if we are given any reasonable stability in prices, will be a thing of the past. The Government has written off £5,000,000 under the Soldiers’ Settlement Act —£5,500.000 and £1,500,000 interest. Thirteen millions out 4>f the accumulated surpluses from the Consolidated Fund were originally available for soldiers’ settlement, so the money written off has not been borrowed money. The Government has often been criticised for the muddle made of the settlement of soldiers, but it is easy to be wise after the event. I have always said since my entrance to Parliament that if we could settle the soldiers on the land and keep them out of the cities and on the land at a cost of £4,000,000 or £5,000,000 the money would be well spent.”
