CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By

Observer.

Ihe exceptionally quiet spell associated with the holiday period is now at an ond, and normal conditions are again the rule at Riccarton. The meeting which opens at 1 rentham on Saturday attracted a very strong list of nominations from this quar. tor, and though _some of the horses will not make the trip Riccarton stables will be well represented at the meeting. After Trentham there will be Wingatui to engage attention, and it is probable that the usual good muster from this quarter will be fotlnd at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month.

The defection of Rapier from the Wellington Cup came as a bit of a surprise, it had been stated quite freely that he would be a starter. The Greyspear horse is m great health after his Auckland trip, but apparently he is to be given a refit from racing in the meantime. Probably he will make his next appearance in the Trentham Gold Cup, which will be run about the middle of March. Footfall is in excellent fettle, and he should race well in the Wellington Cup. in which he appears to be favourably treated at “-11- The southern mare Set Sail will need all her recent improvement to beat him at more than a stone worse terms than in the Great Autumn Handicap. Footfall will have two mates on the Trentham trip. Paperchase only has to repeat recent form to be dangerous. Starflight has not. raced since spring, but he has been galloping well on the tracks.

The team to represent Sir George Clifford at Trentham consists of half a dozen horses, XT’?, , oud P a y their way on the trip. ClnkEplay will have plenty of weight in the Wellington Stakes, but she is certain to run well. Another two-year-old in the team. Full Feather, has been galloping exceptionally well, and he will win if he repeats his track form. Sudden Storm, a smart hack, will have to do her future racing in good company, and it remains to lie seen whether she is equal to it. Front Rank has been a disappointment this season, but she may do better very soon, as she looks well. Sky Quest will compete in hack sprint events, and she is a likely sort. Wild Work, the remaining member'of the team, is a smart galloper, and apparently she is quite sound at present. E. Scoullar has three horses for the Trentham trip. Countersign looks in the best of health, and she is likely to race much better than she did at southern meetings -during the holidays. Rotor is well, but he has not raced up to expectations lately. Silver Paper will take on the best two-year-olds in the Wellington Stakes, and he will keep them busy, as he is not far removed from top class, while he has escaped a penalty. The absence of Eulalie’s name from the 'Wellington Stakes was a surprise, as she looked dangerous. If Golden Armour, a maiden three year-old, is a better proposition she will be hard to beat. Eulalie is going north to race in handicaps, and if she repeats her best form she will lie dangerous. Goblin Market, the third membcr of the team, has a. reputation, and probably he will race pretty well. Mr G. Gerard may have four horses at Trentham. Paper Boy may show up in the Apprentices’ Plate and other engagements. Silver Coot would have a chance in his races if he would run up to hi s best form. Fair Exchange appears to be only a moderate. The two-year-old Noteworthy may go, but he is not a certainty. Two horses from T. H. Gillett’s stable are going to Trentham, where they should run prominently. Money Order is in’ tho best of form, and ho will keep the opposition very "busy in sprint events. Magna Charla looks well, and his track form suggests that he will soon be a winner.

Nincompoop looks exceptionally well after his holiday racing in the south, where he showed good form. He i s going to Trentham, and he should show up prominently. F. D. Jones is taking three horses to Trentham. Stormy may not be so well worth following as Arikiwai and First Sight, who are improving three-year-olds, both very well. Thorndale will have to tackle much better class at Trentham than he has met so far this season, and he will need all the conditions in his favour if he is to win. Rascal is in the best of health after his racing on the West Coast. He may not be up to the best sprint company, but he may get some money in other events at Trentham.

Assurance has been slow in striking form this season, but his racing during the holidays showed that he was coming on. Ho has a great record at Trentham, where tie has never yet run a bad race. Quarterdeck sprained a fetlock while working one morning last week, and she is on the easy list at present. Arrowmir and Rina Mangu are having a short spell after their holiday racing. Martian Spear developed lameness during the West Coast trip, and he may not race again for some time.

F. D. • Jones has recommissioned tho stable crack, Limerick. He may have a race in the Hazlett Memorial Plate, an 1 he will leave for Sydney at the end of next month. Zaragoza will accompany him as a working mate, and Arikiwai is also a possibility. Martama has returned from Auckland, looking well. He will have his race in the New Zealand St. Leger, after which he will be shipped to Sydney. The intention is to take on Trivalve in the St. Leger, and he may also be a runner in the weight-for-age events, as well as in the King’s Cup. Local trotting trainers are working their horses along steadily, with a view to tho Forbury Park meeting, after which the Metropolitan Trotting- Chib’s fixture will engage attention. For some time past negotiations have been in progress for a meeting between Great Bingen and Native Chief, the two most brilliant pacers in the Dominion. Several difficulties have been overcome, and it is expected that they will race in opposition at Addington on Saturday, February 11, at the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting. The event will be described as an exhibition of pacing, the conditions providing for a flying start, the winner to receive 200sovs and the loser 50sovs. The flying start should suit both horses, and if no hitch occurs they should give a fine exhibition of speed. The pacers Bell Harold. Trenand, and Hoon Hay have been shipped to West Australia.

Concliff is in work on the Addington track. He looks lighter after his Auckland trip, and he does not appear to bd Bound.

' Sea Queen is now being trained by F. G. Holmes. She is a useful trotter, with plenty of stamina. Jackie Audubon is now pacing in very much improved style, and he should not be long before he wins another race. . St. Maura is moving along satisfactorily in her work, but she does not seem to be quite ready yet. Theckla Boy has fined down considerably during the last few months, and he now looks a very useful sort. R. Marshall is working a three-year-old sister to Locanda Mac at Addington. She is a quality looking pacer with a capital action.

The ancient Vice-Admiral is in steadywork at Addington under J. M’Kendry’s charge, but he looks a forlorn hope. The ex-Southlander, Colehill, is now being worked at New Brighton by J. Meacham. He is not likely to’ improve, and it will be a surprise if he wins many races. The Auckland trotter. Petroleuse, is now a member of R. B. Berry's team. She looks a good prospect. - Nelson Price has Stunt Artist in his team. He is unsound and unreliable, but Price has a knack of doing well with horses of this type. The trotter Nelson Bell continues to train on satisfactorily under A. G. Wilson’s charge. He is by Nelson Bingen from that great Southland mare Bellflower, and he gave promise as a youngster of being an exceptional trotter. Later he developed trouble in his hocks, and this poetically ended his prospects. He has Won some stake money, but he is not likely to improve. Royal Audubon has been raced as a trotter and a pacer. He is now being worked at the latter gait, but he may never get beyond the moderate division at that gait.

The trotter Nancy M’Kinney continues to please in her training, but she has not settled down to race properly. Trespass, who is a sister to Talent, is working along in H. Frost’s team, but she will need to improve a lot before she will be as good as her relative. Sea Pearl looks wonderfully- well, and it is surprising that she did not race better at Auckland. High Jinks has never looked better than at present, but he has been a trifle unlucky since he went into H. Frost’s stable. He is a smart sprinter, but a mile and a-half is just far enough for him. H. Frost is working a four-year-old sister to Sahib. • She shows a lot of quality, and she paced pleasingly in a work-put last week. J. N. Clarke is not hurrying the brother to Great Bingen. His work consists of steady pacing, but he seems to be doing all right. Shirley M’Kinney, in R. B. Berry’s stable, is a useful looking pacer, who will do better after she has had some racing experience. R. B. Berry will soon be settled in his new- home at Templeton. The removal of his team from New Brighton will lessen the interest in the training work there. A three-year-old gelding by Harold Dillon from Fatality is a recent addition to A. G. Wilson’s stable. The youngster is just being handled, and he looks a useful sort. When the Ashburton County Racing Club, decided last season to hold a one-day meeting in the middle of January- the date selected came in for some criticism, it being argued that it was too soon after the Christmas and New Year holidays. The meeting attracted satisfactory support, in every w-ay, however, and having passed off successfully the critics were silenced. As a result of this season’s meeting, which was held on Saturday, the objections to the date were again brought prominently under notice. There was a shortage of horses for some of the races, and with a small attendance and a serious falling off in speculation the financial returns will be disappointing. With so much racing during the holidays the date is most unsuitable viewed from any angle. Many of the horses are in need of a rest after their exertions, while backers also require time to recuperate. A day later in February might be satisfactory, but in any case th.? Ashburton Club will be well advised to discard the January- date. Oriflamb experienced no difficulty in Ashburton. The opposition was weak, winning the High Weight Handicap at Ashburton.' The opposition was weak, but he galloped in good style, and he maydo still better, as he was just home from a campaign on the West Coast, where he won on the flat and over hurdles. Oriflamb is a half-brother to Fiery Cross, who numbers an Auckland Cup among his successes. Carnot, who ran second to Oriflamb in the High Weight Handicap at Ashburton, ■was a horse of useful class when he contracted a serious cold at Trentham in July, 1926, and he has never been much use since then. He looked well at Ashburton, but it is doubtful if he will come back to decent form. Wayward was responsible for an attractive performance when he won the Winchmore Hack Handicap at Ashburton. He was always well placed, and lie ran out the seven furlongs very solidly. This was his third success since he was purchased by Mr J. M. Samson just over a month ago. and he looks like turning out a great investment for the Dunedin owner. His brother Autobiograph could go fast, But he did not stay, while he became very fractious. Wayward gives promise of being much better than his relative, while in the meantime, at any rate, his manners are good. Starflight was favourite for the Winchmore Hack Handicap at Asburton, but he failed his admirers rather badly. After having every chance he looked a winner ■when the straight was reached, but a little further on he collapsed. Racing may benefit this Archery three-year-old, who is a half-brother to Limelight, but his performance was a trifle disappointing. . Court Jester finished on well to gain second place in the Winchmore Hack Handicap, and a repetition of this form will make him a winner before long. Sir Roy experienced no difficulty in disposing of his three opponents in the Tinwald Handicap. He is at the top of his form at present, and he may earn further Honours at Trentham. Margaret Birney set out to win the Tinwald Handicap from end to end. a i>olicy that is usually followed with her, >ut the length of the journey found her out. Te Awhina, the winner of the Laginhor Plate, was in a good position all

the way, and she had the race in safe keeping over a furlong from home. It was her second start in a race, and she is going to be a useful performer in better company- later on. She is a three-year-old fillv by Paper Money, with a good share of the family speed. Rigmarole put in a brilliant run over the last two furlongs to get second ’in the Lagmhor Plate, and she would have been hard to shake off had she got a decent position in the early stages. A win for the Absurd filly may come soon. Scoff ran a good race when he won the Moreton Hack Handicap. The Paladin colt may never reach good sprinting class, but he is a speedy galloper who will win lots of races yet. Amorist was travelling well in the early part of the Moreton Hack Handicap, and after losing his place through going wide at the entrance to the straight, he was going on strongly again at the winning post. Another win may soon come his way.

Amor went well in the early- part of the Moreton Handicap, being the pacemaker for half a mile. He should do yvell later, when he has had more racing. Moorland ran ohe of his best races when he won the Wakanui Handicap. There was a hard struggle in the straight, and he battled on in fine style. The Riccarton three-year-old Silver Coot had every chance in the Wakanui Handicap, but after being one of the leaders most of the way, he faded out at the end. He might have gone on a bit further had he been nursed for a final dash, but it was disappointing to his admirers to see him stop as he did. The South Canterbury mare Gay- Sonnet was backed very confidently in the Wakanui Handicap. Her chance was seriously prejudiced by- her failure to get out smartly- from the barrier, and after running un to a decent position she stumbled and lost her place on reaching the straight, after which she was not persevered with. Gay Sonnet will soon atone for this failure. Magna Charta caused a lot of trouble at the start of the Wakanui Handicap. He showed a strong objection to facing the barrier, and he was in the rear when the field was sent off. After he had been given his full share of latitude his great speed soon carried him into a good position, but he faded out when the straight was reached. Magna Charta is not going to have a successful racing career unless he can be cured of his bad manners at the barrier.

WELLINGTON NOTES.

{From 01-r Own Correspondent ’

Mr J. A. Taylor’s horses Royal Picture and Tresham have left Trentham. and will in future be trained by T. F. Quinlivan at Hastings. Mr V. Riddiford has disposed of Tone (Leighton—First Class), winner of the Maiden Plate at Awapuni on Boxing Day, and she has now been shipped to Sydney. It is reported that the South Island horseman C. Emerson, who rode Childsplay and Rapier, in their successes at Riecarton in the spring, will have the mounts on the horses named in any engagements at Trentham.

Staghunter will be ridden by B. H. Morris, who won on the local-owned two-year-old at Rieehrton. The Auckland trainer J. T. Jamieson is expected to have half a dozen horses at the Wellington meeting. F. D. Jones was bringing four, but has since reduced his team to three;

Golden Wedding ricked herself before Christmas, and after making a .seemingly S°°dl recovery suffered a recurrence of the trouble on the eve of her departure for Dargaville, and s o the trip was cancelled. Master Doon s injuries are healing gradually, but tne well-performed Lucullus gelding is not likely to face the starter for some considerable time. 4 Sir Russell stood up to his two race s at Ellerslie in good style, but M. She will be heard from at meetings during the autumn, as the handicap class is at present \ery weak in the north.

After racing prominently at the big fixture only to ge place money, Siaosi has been leit at Ellerslie, where he will undergo a course of schooling under E. Rae’s guidance. He is still in his prime, and an ideal type for hurdling, at which branch of the game he should prove a pood proposition for Mr H. L. Russell. Sir Rosebery recovered from the lameness which troubled him after racing over hurdles at Ellerslie, and was taken to Dargavillc, but it is doubtful whether he will survive another solid preparation. Beau Cavalier came on fast with his racing at the summer meeting, and next time out over either hurdles or country he will be a. much more difficult proposition, especially as at present we are -weak in all classes except hacks in this district. Cynthia N. was very unlucky in the Grey Handicap at Ellerslie, and a§ she seems to be improving all the time, it looks as if her turn may come at Takapuna. Paganelli was not at his best on the final day at Ellerslie when beaten by Money Order and High Finance. He will freshen up with hi s return home, and is likely to show what a really good sprinter he is when he again lines up at Trentham.

ASHBURTON RACES. Saturday, January 14.

The summer meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club was held in dull threatening weather, but there was no rain. The attendance was small. The club received a big list of nominations, but the acceptances were disappointing, as two of the fields were-.re-duced to four runners. Speculation was light, the totalisator investments being £7721 10s, compared with £10,642 last year, lhe racing was not exciting, and it was in every way a very quiet fixture. COMMENTS ON”THE RACING. January 14. 1 he , 7, air *° race meeting is voted to be oPe .? f a country meetings on the Southland circuit. The club’s 1928 fixture lived up to the name gained by its predecessors and provided a splendid d a y s sport f° r t^le nian y patrons who atalJ parts oI the Province, lhat the meeting was a successful one financially is reflected in both the totalisator returns and the gate receipts, the a^ er being £3 up on last year, lhe enterprise shown by the club in’ providing greater stake money was also rewarded, the nominations and entries constituting a record. The meeting also marked the opening of the steeplechase season in Southland, and the programme was made even more attractive this year by the inclusion of a juvenile classic race on the card.

Interesting racing was witnessed throughout, the only accident marring the meeting being a spill on Stormbell by S Todd in the Birchwood Trot, in -which ‘the rider was severely injured about the left hip and the legs. He was taken to the hospital. In the last race the starter (Mr A. D. MTvor) came in for some censure for the latitude extended to the notorious Jack o’ Lantern The Fleetham gelding held the field up for over 10 minutes and was finally started from the rear of the field, but not before he had kicked his pilot (L. J. Ellis) and rendered him hors de combat for a few minutes. Ellis had dismounted and was assisting to get Jack o’ Lantern to face the barrier when he was kicked on the body and knocked out. He soon recovered, however, and was able to take part in the race.

Proceedings opened with the Ohai Maiden Plate, in which Coomassie was sent out a hot favourite. The confidence placed in her was quite justified, as she gave nothing a chance from the barrier rise and won under a strong pull from the Songbird gelding Alananui, who stayed on we “-' , In . Nightcaps Trot, Cardinal and Blue looked to have the race won a furlong from home, but Turi Chimes came with a great rattle and, finishing strongly won comfortably. Postmark, Luath, and Vitalis lost their chances by dwelling at the post. „ S?*. rose was the only scratching for the Wairio Cup. From a fair start Schottische and Bilbo went to the front, closely attended by Baldowa and Celerity II with Queen Balboa struggling for position from the of her John Bradbury and Black Duke were at the rear of the he d. Going along the back Queen Balboa, Bilbo, and Schottische were leading Celerity who was pulling Didham out of the saddle Black Duke moved up round the top turn' bpt could not get near the leaders. At the distance, Bilbo and Queen Balboa set to and in the race to the post Queen Balboa prevailed; Celerity being a good third. All the honours of the race were with the winner. She was momentarily chopped out

at the start and had to make play from the outside. Celerity II is very fit for her Wellington engagements, and, with the minimum, will take a lot of beating in the big event. L. J. Ellis will ride her in thq Wellington Cup. John Bradbury ran Poorly, and the distance was too great for Black Duke. Baldowa went- a good race into fourth place. Flying Mist paid the biggest dividend of the day when she won the Woodlaw Hack. She had too much pace for her opponents, and led all the way. Sparkling Eyes, the favourite, was sore and ran accordingly. King Balboa’s third was a good effort. He was chopped out at the start and finished strongly close up. The steeplechase provided a splendid exhibition of jumping. Scamp led practically throughout, and was only beaten over the last' furlong. The winner waited in behind, and came away over the final bit to win easily. Galway was not fit to see the journey out and was never nearer than fourth.

The Wairaki Stakes proved a good thing for Red Sea. Money Mint went a fair race, but had no chance with the Valkyrian youngster, who won hard held. Solrose hung in. behind Black Duke and Jack o’ Lantern for six furlongs of the Wrey’s Bush Welter, and fought out the last bit with Spean Bridge, who finished gamely, under pressure. Black Duke had every chance, but failed to respond to the whip. It was an exciting finish to a good day’s sport. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. THE ’MOOREFIELD HANDICAP. SYDNEY, January 15. The President (Mr J. Sheehy), in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, drew members’ attention to the increased gate takings, tending to show the increasing popularity of the meeting. Paid admissions amounted to £3l 16s, which was considered very satisfactory. Last year £9Ol was given in stakes, and for tlu coming meeting the same amount, plus a cup valued at £25, has been allocated. During the year £176 was spent upon the club’s property. The course has been widened and the bends eased New turnstiles have been erected and every effort has been made ♦ortho consideration of the public’s comfort. The club has decided not to charge motor car admission, as it is felt that the motor plays a big part in the club’s activities, and is the means of bringing fully 90 per cent, of its patrons to the course. Government taxes again took a large slice of the club’s funds, close on £lOOO being paid out altogether. Notwithstanding this the club is in a healthy financial condition, and a policy of constant improvement in property and stakes is being followed.

The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year saw most of the retiring officers re-elected, and one and all are enthusiastic at the prospects for the next meeting. It is hoped that the Dunedin owners will again afford the club their support not only with nominations, but with their presence as well.
