WALLACETOWN STOCK SALE. INVERCARGILL, March 1. Satisfactory prices ruled at the fortnightly Wallacetown sale to-day, when large yardings were in evidence in ail classes. Fat sheep prices were on a par with those ruling a fortnight ago, but an upward tendency was noticeable in fat lamb values. Fat cattle values receded somewhat, though only to the extent thac they had appreciated a fortnight previously. Ox beef sold at 30s per 1001 b; good heifer beef realised 27s 6d; while cow beef ranged from 20s to 20s 6d per 100) b. I. tore sheep met with a fair all-round demand, consequently prices were good. Store cattle prices were firm. Fat Cattle. —This yarding was a largo one and considerably in excess of butchers’ requirements. The quality was good, however, but the tone of the northern markets was reflected locally, and in incdium quality beef prices dropped considerably. Extra prime bullocks brought £l4; good butchers’ bullocks from £9 to £11; with lighter sorts down to £7 10s. Extra prime cows realised up to £9 7s fid; medium weights from £5 10s to £6 10s; lighter down to £3 10s; extra prime heifers £9 10s; medium weights from £6 to £7 10s; lighter sorts £4. Vealers sold at from 25s to 40s, with runners up to £3. Store Cattle.—The largest entry for the year was forward, and the bulk was disposed of at auction. Aged bullocks (from the West Coast) made £9 17s 6<l, while younger sorts realised £7 16s. Two year and a-half old bullocks brought £6 Bs, less forward being quoted at £5 17s 6d; yearling steers. £3 17s 6d to £4 10s; empty cows, £3 7s; and barren heifers £5 ss. Aged and inferior empty cows realised froin £2 to £3, and a line of steer calves brought 38s. Fat Sheep.—The yarding, a large . one, included some exceptionally well-finishect wethers, a number of prime wethers, and an average selection of fat lambs. An easing of fat sheep values resulted, freezing buyers securing practically the lot. Extra ,prime wethers made up to 28s; other heavy sorts halting at 265; good butchers’ wethers 23s 6d to 25s 6d ; lighter weights from 22s 6d to 23s 6d. Extra prime young ewes sold at 20s 6d; good fat ewes 15s; freezing weights from 10s to 13s. Fat Lambs. —There was an average yarding of good quality, excellent prices being realised. Prime butchers’ lambs sold up to 275; good freeders from 23s to 24s 6d; light weights 21s to 22s 6d. Store Sheep.—There was a heavy yarding, the demand being steady and resulting in a good sale. Lambs predominated, but several lines of good store sorts were forward and brought prices equalling those of fat lambs. Store lambs also sold well. Inferior ewes sold down to 6s. with good ordinary aged sorts bringing from 10s to 12s. Wether lambs realised 15s 8d to 19s 9d (according to quality), while the value for ewe lambs went up to 22s ’ fid, the bidding receding to 19s. Ordinary store lambs sold from 10s 4d to 14s 5d and 16s 9d. Two, four, and six-tooth breeding ewes were disposed of at 28s. and others at 24s 4d.

ADDINGTON MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH. March 2. Practically a record yarding of store sheep was forward at to-day’s sale. Other sections attracted about normal entries. Store Sheep.—Practically two-thirds of the entry were from the North Island. They were of a much better class than of late, and as farmers are now ready to stock up and the recent rain has brightened the feed outlook there was a much brisker sale. Good young ewes were better by up to 2s per head than last week, four and five-year sorts also being better by about Is. Lambs sold at about late rates, there was a good clearance of all classes. (From Oxjk Own Correspondent-) INVERCARGILL, March 4GRAIN. Oats.—There is nothing to report in the way of business during the last week. Any business being dene at the present is undoubtedly in Canterbury oats which, though not actually available, will, at all events, soon be ready for shipment. Local new crop oats will probably be offering towards the end of the month, but the major portion of the crop will not be ready *or threshing for some little time later. The only oats' available locally are last season s, and these being well matured are considered to be worth more money from the milling and feeding point of view. To-day’s export values are nominally Is 2s for old crop A grade, 3s B grade, f.0.b., s.i. Northern buyers, however, are not responding to these quotations. Chaff.—There is no possibility of anv shipping business, as farmers refuse to sell at the parity of shipping values. The only business taking place is for local consumption on the basis of £3 10s per ton at handy sidings for really prime quality. Inferior quality is impossible for sale. Ryegrass.—The market’ has hardly yet settled down, but. on the - basis of prices to growers shipping values, will, in all probability, rule round about 3s 9d per bushel for machine-dressed seed of 80 per cent, germination weighing 271 b to 281 b. growers, however, are almost unanimous in declining to sell at prices offered by merchants. The quantity offering seems to be in excess of last year. Care again has to be taken U. buying, as some of the seed has been touched by the early January frosts. Crested Dogstail.—ln the past the bulk of this has been grown in districts served by Gore as the centre, but this -year the position seems to be rather reversed. Considerable offerings are being made by growers at the present, chiefly lots of stripped seed and threshed out of the stook and as far as these are concerned it is evident germination most be taken into careful consideration. Those farmers who have been careful enough to put their crop into stack will undoubtedly reap the advantage of better, prices. Shipping values to-day are nominally Is to Is Id per lb, depending on quality for" seed germinating 85 to 90 per cent. STOCK REPORT. Tlie stock market is firm with prices much on a par with our report of last week. . Fat cattle are in plentiful supply, and prices show no’ indication of an immediate rise. Fat sheep are also offering

freely, and last Wallacetown sale showed the fat pens well filled and prices slightly easier. Store "sheep are now coming forward, and the yardings at the country centres are now fairly large ones, and the prices obtained must bo satisfactory to the vendors. Fat Cattle. —Prime heavy bullocks, £l2 10s to £l4 10s; medium-weight do, £lO 10s to £ll 15s; prime hoavv heifers. £7 15s to £8 10s; medium do, £6 to £7; prime heavy cows, £7 . 10s to £9; . medium do, £5 15s to £6 10s; runners, to £5; vealers, 255. to 355. Prime ox beef, to 30s per 1001 b; prime heifer beef, 27s 6d to 30s per 1001 b; cow beef, 20s to 22s 6d per 1001 b. Fat Sheep.—Prime heavy wethers, 26s to 28s; medium-weight do, 24s to 25s 6d; lighter do, to 225; prime heavy ewes, 16s to 18s; medium do, 12s 6d to 14s 6d; prime heavy lambs, 24s 6d to 275; freezing lambs, 22s to 23s 6d. Store Cattle. —Three-year steers, £8 to £9 15s; two-year do, £5 10s to £7; yearling do, £3 10s to £5; calves, to 30s; twoyear heifers, £3 to £3 10s; old cows, £1 10s to £2 10s. OAMARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent ) OAMARU. March 4. Although there have been a number of sales of wheat during the past week, the market for grain generally has been quiet. The position in ..regard to wheat is so uncertain that neither millers nor growers appear inclined to operate on a larger scale. A fairly large parcel of Velvet wheat changed hands at 6s 3Ad per bushel on trucks. Several transactions in Hunters have taken place at 5s 8d per bushel, country stations, while Tuscan B's sold at from 5s 5d to 5s 6d, and Dreadnough at 5s 4d to 5s sd. The tendency of the lower grade wheats appear to be in the. direction of a decline, rather than appreciation. The position of oats shows no alteration. A Gartons have been sold at as low as 2s per bushel, but other sales are reported at 2s 2d and 2s 4d, according to quality. B grade is difficult to sell, and the prices offering are not tempting growers to sell. Whether the position will improve is a matter of supreme uncertainty. Oaten sheaf chaff is not. offering in large quantities, and the nominal price ranges between £3 and £4 per ton. Operations in barley have been restricted, and there does not, appear to be a demand for the free article. G\ass. seeds have not begun to move, though isolated sales of cocksfoot and perennial rye are reported at figures that favour the purchasers. Live stock movements have consisted largely in the delivery of lines purchased on forward delivery. Sound-mouth Corriedale ewes have sold at 28s, forward station lambs to 21s 6d, fat lambs from 25s 6d to 265, and fat ewes at 14s. There has been an easing in the values of fat wethers, and sales made have been at prices ranging from 23s to 275. Fat ewes have similarly dropped, and have sold at 13s to 16s. The value of bullock beef has receded, and the prices ruling this week have been from 30s to 32s per 1001 b. Good heifer beef is realising 30s, and cow beef from 15s to’2os per lOOlb. The pig' market has not shown a great deal of activity, and prices are about the same as last week. FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD. Reilly’s report:—Full supplies of all lines available.
