AN UNUSUAL REQUEST.
ACCUSED PERSON’S PREDICAMENT. WELLINGTON, February 16. A rather unusual request was made in th’e Magistrate’s Court to-day, when a man who was arrested in Christchurch and brought to Wellington, asked His Worship if he would make an order that the Government pay his fare back again, as the case against him had been dismissed. The accused was Frederick Rob-
e.rt Garlics, a carpenter, agea 00, anu ue appeared on the charge of stealing a gladstone bag containing various articles to the total value of £2 14s. the property of Thomas Leslie Evans. Four witnesses were called for the prosecution, two of .whom stated that the accused was not the man they had seen with the bag in company with another. A second-hand dealer, however, said she was positive Garlick had pawned an overcoat with hef 1 for five shillings on November 24, which turned out to be part of the stolen property. A police constable also stated he had seen Garlick with the bag in company with another man. Mr E. Page, S.M., said there was not sufficient evidence to convict the accused. The theft had occurred in November, and after having heard the evidence he did not think that proper identification had been established. Garlick : Could you do something about my fare, Your Worship? The police arrested me as soon as I came out of hospital in Christchurch, and brought me up here. '"I had no money with me at the time and have none now. If I can get back to Christchurch again all will be well, for lam going harvesting. My brother, I might also state, is willing to give me a job as manager of his farm. As I had to come up here and the case has been dismissed I was wond'ering if you could possibly make an order so that I could get*away to where I have people and friends again. The Magistrate said he had no power to do as Garlick suggested. The police had brought the action in good faith, and though the case had been dismissed he could not make an order for the fare ' back to Christchurch.
