RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS.

A DELAY SUGGESTED. PALMERSTON N.. February 1. An important recommendation bearing upon the health of -school children was made at to-night’s meeting of the Central School Committee, when it was decided that the Education Department be recommended to delay the opening of the primary schools in future to the last w*eek in February, Speaking to the motion, the Chairman (the Rev. H. T. Peat) stated that the climatic conditions of New Zealand were of a nature which made the assembling of children in the rooms, which inevitably would be hot, a matter to be avoided. Mr Peat pointed out that during an epidemic, when the schools did not open until late in the year, the children suffered no disability regarding their education. He thought, therefore, the best interests of the children would be served if the reopening were delayed.
