TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM.
EARLY INSTALLATION. WELLINGTON, February 1. It is estimated that it will cost approximately £140,000 to install on the main railway lines of New Zealand the telephone control system in connection with which Messrs J. W. Smith and E. S. Brittenden, two officers of the Railways Department, are now making observations in Australia. The sections selected for trial purposes are Wellington to Marton, in the North Island, and Christchurch to Oamaru, in the South Island. The cost of those portions will be respectively £10,500 and £13,000, a total of £23,500. All the materials have been ordered and are coming to hand, and it is expected that within a week or so a start will be made with the installation of tho system. In between six and nine months the system will probably be in operation.
