Mr J. Foote, of Hokitika, who was in Christchurch recently, said that he had had ' 36 years’ experience of West Coast rivera ' from Greymouth southwards, and never had he seen them in better condition than at present in regard to whitebait. About 125 fishermen were supplying the two whitebait factories in ' Hokitika, and large quantities of the fish were now being sent to Christchurch, arriving in that city on the evening of the day on which they were caught. As long as the rivers were kept clear from the pollution caused by sawdust from mills, the industry would increase enormously, and would prosper, but if that form of pollution was allowed the industry simply would be wiped out. He suggested that, if there was an open season from September 1 to December 7, the fish would have June, July, and. August to run, which would bo quite sufficient.
