WELLINGTON OBSERVATORY.

PROPOSED PURCHASE. WELLINGTON, January 28. The purchase of the city observatory by the New Zealand Institute was considered at to-day’s meeting of the Board of Governors. After discussion the following motion was carried:— Provided that (1) we are assured by adequate legal opinion that the course proposed is in accordance with the provision of the trust, the amount to be expended by the Carter Fund shall not exceed £5OO for the telescope and £3OOO for the building; (2) that full and proper provision be made by the Wellington Astronomical Society, or other responsible body, for the upkeep and work of the observatory. The Carter Fund shall not be called upon in any way to provide for this. Proposal three of the committee:—That the institute, as Carter trustees, should buy the city telescope at the price paid . by the pity Council, giving the site and ! the institute, as Carter trustees, managing < the observatory, be adopted and that in' terms thereof an agreement with the Wellington City Council be finalised.
