PALMERSTON SHOW.

GOOD ALL-ROUND DISPLAY. The weather was” fine for the annual summer show of the Palmerston-Waihemo A. and P. Society, which was held on Friday, and as a result a large crow' of settlers from the neighbouring districts was present. The show was one of the most successful yet held under the auspices of the society. The entries were a record in every way. All sections were well contested and not a few Dominion and provincial champions were on show. The catalogue was a large one, and embraced a large variety of classes, and it was nd easy task to put through all the exhibits in the short time at the committee’s disposal. The president (Mr W. B. Gallo-way) and the secretary (Mr A. M'William i were greatly assisted by a large and energetic working committee. The gate showed a considerable increase on that of last year and the society’s finances will be greatly helped by this year’s event. At luncheon the president took the opportunity to present two cups won outright last year to Mr J. M. Smith (Kakanui). At the same time he heartily thanked the judges and the various officials for the manner in which they h?.o carried out their duties. SHEEP. The various sheep classes contained many outstanding animals, chief among which were the Corriedales from Bushey Park and the Border Leicesters from Mr T. S. Little’s stud at Windsor. The entries in both these sections were exceptionally good. Mr J. A. Johnstone’s Corriedales which took practically all the awards in their respective classes were a splendid bunch, many of which have already won Royal and provincial honours at Christchurch, Auckland, Oamaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill. The Border Leicesters also made a particularly fine exhibit. It is to be regretted that the removal of Mr C. F. Overton from the district during the year should occasion the absence of his stock, which had become well known for its consistent quality. He would have been a rival worthy of the Windsor breeder, whose stock have figured prominently at provincial shows in Otago and Canterbury, and have also several Royal awards to their credit. Messrs J. Wylie and J. Chisholm also figured in the .prize list. The merino display was supplied by Mr G. Ross> who was the only exhibitor. His stud has a more than local reputation, and has been seen at the Palmerston Show for many years now. Messrs D. Ross, Ireland Bros., and J. Chisholm were the only exhibitors in the Romney Marsh classes, and the tw r o firstnamed divided honours fairly evenly. The male and female championships went to Mr D. Ross. The fat sheep classes were much more interesting, and many fine types were shown. The lambs were in good condition and were for the most part eminently suited for the freezing industry. CATTLE. The cattle rings, though they included a wide range of types and breeds, were not as well filled as they might have been. Both beef and milking breeds were represented, and the few crossbreds entered were of the best. The display of beef types-con-sisted of a very fine bunch of Shorthorns from Bushey Park and a few Herefords and fat cattle. _ Mr Johnstone’s entry were all prominent prize-winners at metropolitan shows earlier in the season, and have won many championships at Christchurch, Oamaru. Dunedin, and Invercargill. The two animals entered in the three-year-old or over class were Bushey Park Augusta’s Hero and Bushey Park Lavender Royal, both of whom have a great record in the show ring. Augusta’s Hero is a son of Edgecote’s Hero, a £IO,OOO sire, and combines the Collynie and Millhills strains in his pedigrees—both of which strains are world famous. HORSES. Keen competition, good entries, and excellent quality characterised the horse display in both draught and light sections. Mr J. M. Smith (Kakanui) was present with some of his renowned Clydesdales, and annexed several premier awards. Mr J. Dow (Outram) was also well represented by prize-winning stock. The light horse classes included many proved champions, among which were Mrs T. D. Dalziel’s Chrysler (champion hack), Miss Nicholl’s Plato, and Mr G.
