TAUPO FISHING AREA.

SEASON’S FISHING PROSPECTS.

, AUCKLAND, January 22. Anglers who visit Taupo in a month or two s time may expect some exceptionally fine fishing in the lake and the neighbouring rivers. On account of the lateness of the last spawning season fishing has not leached it best, but experienced anglers say that when big runs take place about March next the sport will be well worth while. Discussing the conditions at Taupo last week Mr F. Moorhouse, Government Conservator of Fish and Game at Rotorua, stated that ample quantities of three and tour-year-old trout free from parasite were to be obtained in Lake Taupo, though at present they would not take the flv on ° f tlle al,un 4 ancc °f feed. The fact that they were late in spawning last season would mako them late in running this season, but a great improvement should” be noticed in March. Nevertheless fishing at Taupo was quite good and anglers who had sampled the waters seemed to be perfectly satisfied. Special Taupo licenses were selling very well, no fewer than 64 having, been taken out from January 8 to 15. Fishing in that locality was bound to improve as the season advanced. Lake Rotorua was also well stocked, though there a B a m the fish would not at present rise to the fly. The results obtained from trolling, however, were very, good, some of Hie fishermen catching the day’s limit. At Taupo any amount of six and sevenpounders v'ere bein'? lifted at present, one specimen weighing 16£Ib. Speakingxof the Government’s decision to take over the Taupo area under the Native Lands Act and remove the Rotorua hatcheries to Tokaanu, Mr Moorhouse said the staff at Rotorua would co into its new quarters before the spawning season opened m June.. Besides the hatchery, which was now being prepared, there would be quarters for the officers of the department and quarters for the men, a irarage, and store shed. The buildings would be located about four miles out of Tokaanu on the Waimarino road, and would practically be a duplication of the Rotorua hatcheries. It was intended to collect rainbow trout ova from the waters of the lake and supply ova and fry to the acclimatisation societies and private purchasers as had been done at Rotorua. The hatcheries at Rotorua would be used as a rearing station only.
